Kaunas University of Technology

The Kaunas Technical University ( KTU in Lithuanian : Kauno technologijos universitetas ) is the largest technical university in Lithuania and the Baltic States . It has about 19,000 students (2006), 550 of them in doctoral programs .

history

On February 16, 1922, the holiday of Lithuanian independence, the ceremonial opening act of the University of Lithuania took place in the hall of the "Higher Courses" (current KTU house no. 1). The house of the "higher courses" and other facilities created for study were transferred to the new University of Lithuania.

As soon as the university started operating, the Lithuanian parliament approved the university's long-discussed statute.

Vytautas Magnus University

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the death of the Lithuanian Prince Vytautas on June 7, 1930 and after the assessment of the achievement and importance for science in the country, the university was named Vytautas Magnus ( VDU in Lithuanian).

The university consisted of seven faculties: theology-philosophy, evangelical theology, humanities, law, mathematics-natural sciences, medicine and technology.

After the recovery of Vilnius, reforms were carried out by Vytautas Magnus ( VDU ) and Vilnius universities. In 1940 the VDU took part in the restoration of the Vilnius University: in winter the faculties of humanities and law moved: including 1000 students from these faculties, teachers and auxiliary staff, several teaching aids and inventory.

Kaunas University

When the Soviet Army occupied the country on August 21, 1940, the VDU was renamed Kaunas University on the orders of the Soviet Soviet government. Almost all student organizations were closed, and some professors and students were arrested. In the fall, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences moved to Vilnius.

Vytautas Magnus University

When Lithuania was occupied by the Germans on August 21, 1941, the university reverted to the name Vytautas Magnus. After the provisional government had partially reorganized the university, it consisted of 5 faculties: theology, philosophy, technology, civil engineering and medicine. When the German occupying power wanted to form the SS units on March 17, 1943 and failed, they closed almost all universities and the VDU. So that the young people have the opportunity to study technology and medicine, the professors of the closed university continued their lectures at home and in the institute for adults. In 1944 the retreating German army blew up the institute building for physics and chemistry.

On November 13, 1944, the occupying power of the USSR decided to reopen the university, which operated under the name of Vytautas Magnus University until 1946.

Kaunas State University

In June 1949 the Faculty of History and Philology at Kaunas State University was closed.

Kaunas Polytechnic Institute

On October 31, 1950, the order was issued by the Minister of Higher Education of the Soviet Union, S. Kaftanov, to reorganize Kaunas State University into the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute (the first category) and the Faculty of Medicine into the Kaunas Medical Institute (the second category). The Kaunas Polytechnic Institute operated from 1951 to 1990 and was the first independent technical university.

When the first rector, Professor Kazimieras Baršauskas, died in 1964, the institute's management suggested that the Central Committee of the Lithuanian Communist Party name the institute by the name of the deceased, but this was not accepted. But according to the assessment of the merits of Professor K. Baršauskas, the Ultrasound Laboratory he founded in the Kaunas Polytechnic Institute ( KPI ) was named after his name.

From April 22, 1974 to October 23, 1989, KPI was called the Antanas Sniečkus Polytechnic Institute in Kaunas.

In 1989 the middle school was founded by KPI on a trial basis and later renamed the KTU-Gymnasium; it was the first university school in Lithuania for gifted students. In 2010 this school was named the best secondary educational institution in our country (according to ratings from the weekly Veidas).

Kaunas Technological University

With the approval of the majority of the Institute Council on April 4, 1990, KPI was renamed Kaunas University of Technology and an application to change the name was submitted to the Supreme Council of Lithuania. By resolution of the Presidium of the Supreme Council of Lithuania on October 31, 1990, the previous university status was returned to KPI on February 16, 1922.

On March 27, 1991, the second conference session of the university staff approved the university statute. The conference not only accepted the statute, but also decided on the further reform of the university.

The changes not only included changing the name of the university, it became a technical institution with a universal study system.

In 1992 a three-tier higher education system was implemented. The flexible modular credit point system was set up and further developed. The emphasis here is on the academic part of the course, basic training and independent work. In order to promote internationalization and attract more foreign students, the courses were designed in foreign languages. In 1998 the KTU joined the Great University Charter ( Magna Charta Universitatis in Latin) and in a few years became a member of the 9 international organizations.

The regional KTU Business Incubator ( KTU Regional Business Incubator in English) was founded. It is the first technological incubator in Lithuania that supports business start- ups .

In 2007, the KTU received an award from the World Intellectual Property Organization ( WIPO in English) for patenting and registering commercial objects.

In 2008, Professors Vytautas Getaučius and Juozas Vidas Gražulevičius from the Faculty of Chemical Technology were honored with the WIPO award.

The Prize for Cooperation in Development ( Nacionalinė pažangos premija in Lithuanian), which represents a contribution to improving the quality of life and increasing competitiveness of a country, was awarded to Professor Rymantas Jonas Kažys for the development of ultrasound technologies for measurement and diagnosis. Rymantas Jonas Kažys was honored for a breakthrough in European scientific research and application areas.

In 2008 the KTU Institute for Environmental Technology (headed by Professor Jurgis Kazimieras Staniškis) received the "Energy Globe Award" for the system for cleaner production, innovation, development and implementation in industry ( APINI-SPIN in English). In 2010, Professor JK Staniškis received the Baltic Sea Award ( The Baltic Sea Award 2010 in English). He is currently the first Lithuanian scientist to receive this honorable award; This award is given to people or organizations who have been able to put the research results and technical decisions into practice that have a major impact on the Baltic Sea and the sustainable development of this region.

In 2009 the Executive Agency of the European Commission ( EACEA in English) awarded the KTU the Diploma Supplement Label . The diplomas with these additions are recognized throughout Europe, which is why they make it easier for graduates to find work not only in their home country, but also abroad.

At the Kaunasser Youth Awards, KTU received the nomination as the best youth partner and the General Student Committee of the KTU

The KTU Children's University has opened at the KTU, where children between the ages of 8 and 12 can get to know different branches of science. They can communicate with scientists, visit laboratories and observe scientific research.

In 2010, a contract was signed to finance the first investment project for the integrated valley “Santaka” (for science-study-business). As part of the project, it was decided to establish a national center for research and development (R&D) with open access on the KTU campus in Kaunas. Here, important technologies of sustainable chemistry, mechatronics, energetics, information technology and communication are specifically developed for the Lithuanian economy; these industries now make up an important part of Lithuanian exports. The project is worth 33.96 million euros. The competence center for food sciences and technologies implemented the project. This Valley “Nemunas” project (for Science-Study-Business) was founded by the KTU and the Institute of Horticulture and Plant Production at the Lithuanian Center of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences ( Lietuvos agrarinių ir miškų mokslų centro sodininkystės ir daržininkystės institutas in Lithuanian) . Research facilities for food technology, technology and quality analysis are concentrated in the center; they enable the modeling, optimization and research of food production and storage.

2013 was the first year of the renewed university program in which the realization of more than 30 joint projects with other universities began; including management of degree programs, improvement of the quality of studies, internationalization, development of human resources, optimization and management of infrastructure, development of marketing and communication.

The improved management system of the KTU courses was approved: the formation of the institutional committees for courses was ordered that mobilize the potential of entire academic departments; developed the mentoring program; A new structure of academic subdivision in line with the traditions of the faculties, their image on the national and international level, their economic efficiency and continuity of activities has been worked out and confirmed. It was decided to concentrate all facilities in the KTU campus, where the basic scientific research base and laboratories are already in place. The former 14 faculties have been reorganized to 9.

In the summer of 2013, an honorary doctorate from the KTU was awarded to Sir Richard Branson, a famous British businessman, billionaire, one of the founders of the most famous global group of companies, the Virgin Group.

In 2014, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Secretary General for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO ), was awarded the honorary doctorate of the KTU: for the use of advanced future technologies to achieve the intelligent defense concept, for intellectual honesty in the protection of general ideals of freedom.

In the same year, Alex Sozonoff, one of the founders of “Startup Space” and the Center for Innovation and Business, received an honorary doctorate for strengthening corporate culture; he also oversees relations between Aalto (Finland), Stanford (USA) and the KTU.

Vladas Lašas, doctor and businessman, was honored with the insignia of the KTU honorary doctor: for the promotion of science, technologies, innovations and corporate culture in Lithuania and at the KTU. On the initiative of V. Lašas, the first Lithuanian satellite “LitSat-1” was launched at the KTU.

The name of the honorary doctor was given to Jūratė Kristina Kazickaitė-Altman, philanthropist of science: for awarding annual student scholarships, significant financial support for teaching staff, events and competitions, for the recognition they deserve in the academic community and for organizing activities from the family foundation Dr. Juozas Petras Kazickas in Lithuania and at the KTU.

On September 1, 2014, the KTU Engineering Lyceum began its activities, the first educational institution of its kind in the country.
