Stephen Conway

Stephen David Conway (born December 22, 1957 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He has been Bishop of Ely in the Church of England since 2011 and a member of the House of Lords since 2014 .

Life

Conway grew up in a multi-cultural environment in South London . As a child, he attended a Sunday Methodist school . He then went to Archbishop Tenison's Church of England Grammar School in the London Borough of Lambeth . He studied Modern History at Keble College of the University of Oxford , and later theology at Selwyn College of the University of Cambridge . He was the first family member to graduate from university. He was accepted as a theology student during his undergraduate studies. After graduating, however, he initially worked as a teacher ; he taught history and English at Glenalmond College, Scotland , an Anglican public school . In preparation for his priesthood, he studied theology at Westcott House Theological College, Cambridge . He did an internship in the psychiatric emergency room at Fulbourn Hospital; this experience shaped his interest in the medical field of mental and spiritual health.

In 1986 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1987 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1986 to 1989 as Vicar ( Curate ) at St Mary Church in Heworth, Tyne and Wear in the Diocese of Durham . He followed from 1989 to 1990 another vicariate at St Michael Church (with responsibility for St Hilda Church) in Bishopwearmouth . From 1990 to 1994 he was the Director of Ordinands responsible for the formation of candidates for priesthood in the Diocese of Durham; at the same time he was an honorary vicar ( Honorary Curate ) at St Margaret Church in Durham. From 1994 to 1998 he was pastor in Cockerton , from 1994 to 1996 with the official title "Priest in Charge" and then as "Vicar". From 1998 to 2002 he was the personal Kaplan (Senior Chaplain) of the Bishop of Durham , Michael Turnbull . At the same time, he was responsible for public relations in the Diocese of Durham as "Communications Officer" . Was he in 2002 Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ), Residenzkanoniker ( Canon residentiary ; canon) and treasurer at the Durham Cathedral ; he held these offices until 2006.

In May 2006 his appointment as "Bishop of Ramsbury" was announced for the first time; the notice will be officially published in June 2006 in the London Gazette . He was ordained bishop on June 22, 2006 in St Paul's Cathedral by Rowan Williams , Archbishop of Canterbury . From late summer 2006 to December 6, 2010 he was, as the successor to Anthony Russell , as "Bishop of Ramsbury" Suffragan Bishop in the Diocese of Salisbury in the Church of England. In July 2010, after the retirement of David Stancliffe , Bishop of Salisbury, he took over the leadership of the Diocese of Salisbury. On August 31, 2010, his appointment as Bishop of Ely was announced. On October 18, 2010 he was elected by the Cathedral Chapter (College of Canons) in Ely; the election was formally confirmed by the Provincial Court on December 6, 2010, making him formally Bishop of Ely. His inauguration and enthronement took place on March 5, 2011 in Ely Cathedral . On June 4, 2014, Conway became a member of the House of Lords as a Spiritual Lord in his capacity as Bishop of Ely .

Conway is a member of the Anglo-Catholic wing of the Church of England, but he is also influenced by the Charismatic movement . Conway built close ties at the diocesan level with Latvia , the former Romania and Northern Germany ; a close partnership existed between the diocese of Ely and the North Elbian Evangelical Lutheran Church . He is a representative of the Church of England in the L'Arche Community in Great Britain, a charity that supports people with learning disabilities , among others. a. by arranging housing and granting financial aid. He is also Chairman of the Council of Westcott House Theological College.

Conway is unmarried . He is an avid walker . His hobbies include cricket and rugby (as a spectator and visitor), reading (books on theology and history, biographies and thrillers ), cinema and films , as well as traveling and travel literature .
