The Roman Catholic Lambach Abbey Church is part of the Lambach Abbey in Upper Austria . The church consecrated to the Assumption of Mary is also the parish church of Lambach  and belongs to the dean's office Gaspoltshofen in the diocese of Linz . The church and the entire monastery are under monument protection .

history

A Romanesque monastery church was consecrated in 1089. The church was rebuilt in 1233 after being destroyed. Under Abbot Johann III. von Dachsberg (1422–1436) the church was converted into a two-aisled hall church . From 1652 to 1656 the church was rebuilt according to a design by Philiberto Lucchese .

Under Joseph II  the collegiate church became a parish church, the original parish church east of the monastery has served as a cemetery church since then.

architecture

The substructure of the westwork and the towers with the former bell house and the initial gallery area have been preserved from the Romanesque church building. There are remarkable frescoes from the end of the first construction period around 1080 in three domes separated by belt arches with depictions of the Enthroned Mother of God with a child on her lap in a frame of the story of the Three Kings , partly destroyed by later renovations and restored in 1956. Further frescoes around 1080 on the walls with scenes from the youth and public life of Christ, which were blocked by baroque masonry, were uncovered from 1957. Two columns made of Middle Franconian marble have also been preserved from the founding construction around 1060.

The uniformly baroque church building from the 17th century has a single - nave, three-bay nave with a drawn-in two-bay, just closed choir. To the west of the nave is the single-bay Romanesque westwork with vestibule and organ gallery. The interior of the church shows itself with lancet barrel vaults and Ionic double pilasters and a strong continuous cornice .

Furnishing

The mighty high altar as a columnar altar fills the entire end of the choir. Based on the high altar of the basilica of Mariazell based on a design by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach , the altar was planned by Antonio Beduzzi and executed in 1716/1717.
