Silent Nights is a German TV film by Horst Johann Sczerba from 2014. The Christmas tragedy is about Georg ( Matthias Koeberlin ) 's futile attempt to tell his parents ( Katharina Thalbach , Hanns Zischler ) the truth about himself and Rita ( Katharina Schüttler ) rediscovering their love. At the 2014 Festival of German Film in Ludwigshafen, the film was a hit with audiences and critics.

action

For the sake of his parents, Georg and his now divorced wife Rita go to his home town in northern Germany for a Christmas visit. He lives in Cologne and works in a clinic there, but doesn't have the heart to tell his parents that he and Rita haven't been married for several years. With a lot of persuasion he gets Rita, who lives in Berlin, to play this comedy again and again. The holidays always go by without Georg pouring pure wine for his parents, which annoys Rita every time. Nevertheless, she is silent because she thinks it is Georg's job to ensure clarity and not hers. It's not just about the supposedly happy marriage, but also about his professional life. Because he doesn't want to be seen as a failure, he has pretended to be a doctor, and now even a senior doctor. He is "just" a simple nurse, which he has kept from his wife for all these years. But Rita is not completely honest either, because neither in her hairdresser nor in her love life is everything as smooth as she claims.

The same process is repeated every year. Although Rita urges him to tell his parents the truth this time, Georg does not succeed. The family ritual on Christmas Eve with potato salad, a round of Skat and going to the midnight mass together has got stuck. On the return trip Rita confirms every time that this was really "the last time" for her. Neither of them suspected that it was really the last Christmas together this year. A few months later, Georg receives news of the death of his parents. They committed suicide together because they too had their secrets. On the one hand, Clara and Paul had long seen through their son, on the other hand they never admitted how bad Clara was. When she could no longer bear her pain and her husband did not want to be left alone, the couple went on their final journey. In a loving farewell letter they explain their motives to Georg and let him know that they are convinced that he and Rita belong together. Although it doesn't seem like it at first, this wish comes true, because Georg and Rita get together again in this special situation.

Reviews

Ulrich Feld from the Frankfurter Neue Presse commented: “Up to just over 45 minutes, the film is a touchingly told story about lies and fearfully hidden feelings for the festival of love. For example, it is about fear of admitting painful failure to yourself and the people you love. But then the plot tips over, becomes not only sweet and kitsch, again grotesquely inappropriate and finally turns the initially promising Christmas film into a nuisance. "

Rainer Tittelbach from Tittelbach.tv said about this production: “The lies in 'Silent Nights' say a lot about how people relate to one another: Nobody wants to disappoint, hurt, or worry the other. Horst Sczerba's wonderful Christmas tragedy does not prescribe contemplation, but with the help of a reduced aesthetic he creates an interpersonal closeness, which should be the core of the Christmas festival. A thoughtful film with four outstanding actors who provide their roles with normality, but also wrest an ambiguous sense of their own. "
