Stipe Žunić (born December 13, 1990 in Zadar ) is a Croatian shot putter who was also active in javelin and discus throwing at the beginning of his career . Before he started with athletics, he was active as a kickboxer and was also junior world champion there.

Athletic career

Stipe Žunić gained his first international experience at the 2007 World Youth Championships in Ostrava , where he was eliminated in the shot put with 17.12 m in qualification and seventh in the javelin throw with 70.25 m. He then won the bronze medal at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Belgrade with 70.98 m. The following year he took part in the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz , Poland , where he was eliminated with the javelin with 62.44 m in qualification. In 2009 he was at the Junior European Championships in Novi Sad with 54.96 m ninth in the discus throw and with 69.20 m tenth with the javelin. Two years later, he finished eleventh at the U23 European Championships in Ostrava with 69.53 m. Since then, Žunić has mainly focused on the shot put.

In 2014 he took part in the European Championships in Zurich for the first time, finishing fourth there with 20.68 m and seventh at the 2015 European Indoor Championships in Prague with 20.28 m. In 2016 he finished ninth at the European Championships in Amsterdam with a distance of 19.95 m and also qualified for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , where he finished eleventh with 20.04 m in the final . In 2017 a fifth place followed at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade with 21.04 m. He again took part in the World Championships in London and surprisingly won the bronze medal there with 21.46 m in the final behind New Zealander Tomas Walsh and Joe Kovacs from the United States. In 2018 he won the silver medal behind the Bosnian Hamza Alić at the Mediterranean Games in Tarragona with 20.21 m . At the European Championships in Berlin he finished seventh with 20.73 m.

In 2009 and 2010 Žunić became Croatian champion in javelin throw and from 2015 to 2018 in shot put.
