The Słupia ([ ˈsuːpʲa ]; German  Stolpe ) is a 137 kilometers long coastal river in the Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship .

course

The river has its source in the Kashubian Switzerland at a height of 177 m and leads to the northwest. At Ustka ( Stolpmünde ) the Stolpe flows into the Baltic Sea . Because of the steep gradient in the upper reaches of the river, numerous hydropower plants were built . In the 19th century, the Stolpe drove three large mills in the south of Stolp .

The derivation of the name is not clear. But both the Prussiancuff ” (cf. the Lithuanian river Stulpas ) and the old Slavic “ stlŭpŭ ” mean post, post or column or stand. The name describes a fish stand in the river, a device for fishing.

North of Bytów ( Bütow ) and south of Słupsk is the Stolpetal Landscape Protection Park (Park Krajobrazowy Dolina Słupi).
