The documentary film Stolperstein by film director Dörte Franke reports on numerous stages of the art project Stolpersteine and creates a portrait of the sculptor Gunter Demnig . The film goes into the numerous genesis of the more than 22,000 memorial plaques, addresses the public controversy of their installation and shows how the life stories of people who were murdered by the National Socialists are dealt with today .

Events

The film was screened in August 2008 at the 61st Locarno International Film Festival 2008. The television broadcaster arte showed a short version of the film on September 7, 2008. On October 8, 2008, the film was shown at the Osnabrück Film Festival , where it was shown in the competition for the Osnabrück Peace Film Prize, which is endowed with 5,000 euros . On November 1st, 2008 it had its cinema premiere in Cologne's Odeo-Kino and was shown in cinemas nationwide from November 6th, 2008.

Several television channels show a 45-minute summary of the film in their programs.

content

At the center of the film is Gunter Demnig , concept artist with a cowboy hat, who has now cemented over 22,000 names of the six million, largely forgotten Nazi victims into the sidewalks of Germany and Europe. Dörte Franke accompanies him on his trip to see relatives and helpers. His project is opposed by neo-Nazis , representatives of the Jewish community rejected and is even banned in some places. But behind every stumbling block there are committed helpers and private donations. In the last few years a citizens' movement has formed in many places and it continues to grow every day. The film is an artist portrait as well as a road movie and at the same time the story of the largest, decentralized monument in the world. Dörte Franke accompanies a restless artist who has made it his life's work to bring erased biographies back into everyday life. The film leads to people in whom these mini monuments hit a nerve in very different ways:

More and more people are seeing not just small brass plates, but an opportunity to encounter history. The immense demand can hardly be met. The artist wants to continue to manufacture and lay every stone in laborious manual work. He is convinced that only in this way can an individual fate be brought home.

“I think we kind of want to feel like we're paying our guilt. If our parents were standing there now, facing the stumbling blocks, that would be correct. Instead, we children stand in front of it. "(Film quote" Stumbling block ")

Comments

  • TV station ARTE : “Many people see Gunter Demnig's small brass plates as an opportunity to encounter history. The artist wants to continue to manufacture and lay every stone in laborious manual labor, because he is convinced that this is the only way to bring an individual fate home. "
  • Film-suche.de : “The project by the Cologne artist Gunter Demnig to move memorial stones for the more than 6 million people killed by the Nazis for racist and political reasons in front of their former homes has something irritatingly megalomaniac about it. A modern Sisyphus work, which with a simple emotional gesture makes the unimaginable size of the National Socialist crime tangible and at the same time the immediate, neighborly proximity of the crime scenes where the deportations began. "
  • Gay-web.de : “Dörte Franke accompanies the artist on his laying tours in Germany, Austria and Hungary, receives insights into the Werkstadt in Cologne and into the history of the project, which is increasingly developing into a logistical challenge. In doing so, she not only comes close to the person and artist Gunter Demnig, but also to the clients for whom Demnig laid the 'Stolpersteine'. The stories of the client make it clear how much the 'stumbling blocks' are also used as an expression of personal memory culture. The decentralized art project is thus entering into an exciting discourse with the memorial for the victims of the Holocaust in Berlin. "
  • die tageszeitung : “... It would have been all the more desirable that at least the film about this sad stubbornness in Munich and Demnig's special commitment would have been given a suitable slot - not only for political reasons, but also for aesthetic reasons. The Franco-German broadcaster Arte, however, hid Dörte Franke's film in the corner: it was broadcast on Sunday at 1 p.m. "

Film rental

According to the official announcement, it is also possible to show the film in cities and towns where the film is not shown in the cinema program. Furthermore, there is the possibility of organizing discussion events, at which the director Dörte Franke, Gunter Demnig and Uta Franke are present.
