Students for Liberty

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Students For Liberty (SFL) are a worldwide network of student groups who describe themselves as “ classically liberal ” or “ libertarian ”. The "social change theory" of the economist and social philosopher Friedrich August von Hayek is decisive . The main focus here is on individual , economic and academic freedom . SFL describes itself as a young grassroots movement with a big tent . In addition to the relevant theory of social change, there are representatives of different liberal orientations in the organization.

Her work focuses on conferences, webinars and publication dissemination, as well as promoting the activities and networking of her constituents around the world. There are several sub-groups: in addition to the SFL in the USA and Canada, there is the European Students for Liberty; the Estudiantes por la Libertad and the Estudantes Pela Libertade, active in Central and South America; the African Students for Liberty; the South Asian Students for Liberty; the Australia / New Zealand Students for Liberty; as well as a development team for the Asian Students for Liberty. There are currently around 1770 student groups connected to the network. In 2014/15 a total of 58 SFL conferences with 10,700 participants took place around the world.

The sociologist Liana Gamber-Thompson describes the Students for Liberty as embedded in the financing and support structures of institutionalized libertarianism. The Ayn Rand Institute , the Cato Institute and the Foundation for Economic Education make books available for distribution. Together with the Atlas Economic Research Foundation , three books were published, the Foundation also sponsored international writing competitions and the establishment of an African branch of SFL. Foundations of the brothers Charles and David Koch financed trips to SFL events.

history

In 2007, at the "Koch Summer Academy", a practical phase of the Institute for Humane Studies financed by the Charles Koch Institute , the idea of better networking among students in the USA who see themselves as "libertarian" arose. In 2008, the Students for Liberty were founded by Alexander McCobin and Sloane Frost. A first conference in February 2008 brought about 100 participants to Columbia University in New York. The 2015 Washington International Conference was attended by 1,700 students from around the world. Since then, the Students for Liberty have grown into a global network with local groups in countries such as Brazil, Tanzania, Nigeria and Russia.

ESFL Germany

The Students for Liberty have existed in Germany since 2011. Since 2016 they have their own Executive Board and their own magazine called Peace Love Liberty , which appears once a year in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The editor-in-chief is the writer Nikodem Skrobisz. In 2017 and 2018 the regional conference of Students for Liberty Germany took place on the premises of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena, which was accompanied by protests from various left-wing groups who came together in a counter rally under the name Students for Solidarity . In their appeal, they accused the Students for Liberty of being a racist, anti-feminist, fascist and climate-hostile organization. These accusations were criticized by the Students for Liberty as unfounded slurs. The content of the conference, organized under the slogan Freedom Company , included lectures and panel discussions on freedom of expression, the legalization of drugs, entrepreneurship, political correctness and crypto currencies, as well as a lecture by Roland Jahn on the fight for freedom. The protests were probably triggered by the strongly pro-capitalist orientation of the conference as well as the presence of controversial personalities such as Rainer Zitelmann and the sponsorship by EIKE eV and other groups of organized denial of man-made global warming . Greenpeace USA described the network as the front group of Koch Industries .
