The Leone debuted as a two-door hardtop coupé in October 1971, followed by the four-door sedan in February 1972. In October 1972, a station wagon version, also with all-wheel drive, was added to the range. The all-wheel drive station wagon was a great sales success and was therefore primarily responsible for the fact that Subaru is still one of the best-known manufacturers of all-wheel drive vehicles today.

The Leone was the successor to the Subaru FF-1 . The front-wheel or all-wheel drive Leone was powered by a 1.1 or 1.4 liter four-cylinder boxer engine in light metal construction with a central camshaft and 62 to 93 SAE hp. A four- or five-speed manual transmission took over the power transmission, later also a three-speed automatic transmission on request.

In 1977 the Leone underwent a major facelift and received a new dashboard. Also in 1977 Subaru presented a two-seater pick-up variant based on the Leone, the Subaru Brat .

In Germany, in contrast to the Benelux countries, the first Leone generation was not offered.
