Incidents

X-Press Pearl - loss due to fire 2021

The X-Press Pearl of the X-Press Feeders Group of the Sea Consortium, sailing under the flag of Singapore , caught fire in May 2021 only around three months after it was put into service in the Indian Ocean . The fire broke out on May 20, 2021 in the forward area of the ship loaded with 1,486  containers in a container loaded below deck. The ship, which left the port of Hazira in the west Indian state of Gujarat on May 15, 2021 , was at that time around ten nautical miles off Colombo , Sri Lanka , in the roadstead . The fire was fought initially with on-board resources and, from May 21, also by tugs who had come to the rescue and a few days later with the help of specialists from the rescue company Smit Salvage . Twelve crew members were taken off board on May 23 and twelve fire fighting specialists were brought on board in their place. The rest of the crew and the twelve specialists were taken off board on May 25 for safety reasons. Despite the fire fighting on board and by the ships that came to help, including three tugs, ships and helicopters of the Sri Lankan Navy and ships of the Indian Coast Guard, the fire was further fanned by the strong wind and spread over the entire ship. In some cases there were explosions. On June 1, 2021, the Navy announced that the fire had been finally extinguished after 13 days.

During the fire, several containers went overboard, some of which, or their contents, were washed up on the coast of Sri Lanka. These included also several tons of plastic granulate .

The largely burned-out ship will be towed by the Navy in the direction of deeper water on June 2nd in order to prevent the threatened wreck from becoming an obstacle at the port.

description

The ships are powered by a six - cylinder two - stroke diesel engine of the type MAN 6G60ME-C with an output of 12,500  kW . The engine acts on a fixed propeller . The ships are equipped with an electrically powered bow thruster . Four diesel generators, some of which have different configurations, are available for the on-board power supply. An emergency generator is also installed.

The ships have nine 40-foot bays one behind the other in the holds . The holds are equipped with cell guides. They are closed with pontoon hatch covers. On deck, there are also nine 40-foot bays one behind the other on the hatch covers and another 40-foot bay directly in front of the deckhouse . The engine room is located here in the fuselage . There is space for up to 14 containers next to each other on deck; up to seven layers can be loaded here. On deck there are lashing bridges with cell guides for the lowest layer between the hatch covers . For the containers standing on deck directly in front of the deckhouse, the Cellguides extend two layers high. The container capacity of the ships is around 2700  TEU . With homogeneous loading with 14 t heavy containers, the ships can load around 2,300 containers. There are 600 connections for refrigerated containers, 390 of them on deck and 210 in the holds. Most ships were built for container handling without a ship's crane . Some of the ships were equipped with three ship cranes arranged amidships. On the back , a breakwater is to protect against green water.

The deckhouse is arranged far aft. A free-fall lifeboat is located behind the deckhouse on the port side .
