Swjatlana Zichanouskaja (in the international press often Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya ; in the German press often Svetlana Tichanowskaja * 11. September 1982 as Swjatlana Piliptschuk in Mikaschewitschy ) is a Belarusian nonpartisan civil rights activist . She was a candidate in the 2020 presidential election in Belarus .
Life
Zichanouskaja graduated from secondary school in Mikashevichy and from 2000 studied pedagogy at the State Pedagogical University in Mazyr with a focus on German and English. She then worked as a translator for the Ireland- based organization “ Chernobyl Life Line” , among others . After all, she worked as a housewife.
Zichanouskaja is married to the political activist Sjarhej Zichanouski . She has a son and a daughter. More than a year after her husband was arrested as part of his presidential candidacy in Belarus, he was sentenced to 18 years in prison in December 2021.
Presidential candidate
Zichanouskaja's husband, Zichanouski, had announced that he would run for the upcoming presidential election. On May 15, 2020, however, he was denied this by the Central Election Commission. As a result, his wife decided to run for the election, while Zichanouski took over the leadership of the campaign team. On May 29, Zichanouski was arrested by the Belarusian authorities on charges of preparing a serious breach of public order. Amnesty International considers the allegations to be an excuse and asks for his release.
Zichanouskaja is supported by Weranika Zepkala , wife and campaign staff member of the also not an option approved Waleryj Zepkala , and Maryja Kalesnikawa , the coordinator of the campaign team of the arrested presidential candidate Viktar Babaryka .
Zichanouskaya called for the release of political prisoners and a renewed holding of elections under free and fair conditions. When she received threats during the election campaign that she would be arrested and that her children would be taken to an orphanage, she had her children taken to an undisclosed EU country.
In the week before the election, but especially on the day before the election, Zichanouskaja's campaign manager was temporarily arrested. A total of seven of their employees were arrested before the election.
Political activity after the election
Two days after the election it became known that Zichanouskaja had left for neighboring Lithuania . The circumstances were unclear: while she said she had not been influenced in her decision, an election worker said the authorities had forced Zichanouskaya to do so.
She declared - later also during a visit to Berlin - she wanted to continue to take over the leadership in the country and organize the transition. She also called for peaceful protests against Lukashenka . At their suggestion, a coordination council for a peaceful transfer of power was formed. The Belarusian authorities wrote out Zichanouskaya for public calls for a seizure of power for an international manhunt .
In October 2020 she gave a press conference at the German Marshall Fund in Berlin and was received by Angela Merkel in the Federal Chancellery for an interview.
In December 2021 it was announced that she would be the winner of the Charlemagne Prize 2022.
