Sylvie Valayre (* 1964 in Paris ) is a French opera singer ( soprano : lyric, youthful-dramatic and dramatic soprano as well as dramatic coloratura soprano ).

Life

education

Born in Paris, she studied at the local conservatory with teachers such as Christiane Eda-Pierre and Régine Crespin . She took part in master classes with Cathy Berberian , Galina Vishnevskaya , Gino Bechi , Paul von Schilawsky and Giuseppe Di Stefano , who later chose her for a concert at his side at the Théâtre du Châtelet . After completing her vocal studies in Paris, she also studied with character tenor Sergio Tedesco in Rome and with mezzo-soprano Catherine Green in New York.

Early career

Sylvie Valayre made her debut as an opera singer in 1984 as Maria Malibran in a "Homage to Malibran" at the Théâtre Marigny in Paris, in which she performed excerpts from operas such as Semiramide and Norma . Shortly afterwards, Mstislaw Rostropowitsch and Galina Vishnevskaya invited her to the Rome Opera to play the title role in their production of Rimsky-Korsakova's Die Tsarenbraut .

Mimi in La Bohème , Tosca in Tosca , Magda in La rondine , Violetta in La traviata , Norma in Norma , Leonore in Fidelio , Manon in Manon Lescaut , Thaïs in Thaïs , Adina in Der Liebestrank , Liù in Turandot , the Infanta in The Dwarf von Zemlinsky , La voix humaine von Poulenc were other roles that were already part of her repertoire at this time. From 1993 she appeared in major Italian opera houses in works such as La voix humaine (Trieste, Genoa, Naples), Cavalleria rusticana (Trieste, Bologna), L'heure espagnole and Il segreto di Susanna (Trieste).

In 1995 she made her debut in the Netherlands in the role of Lady Macbeth in Verdi's Macbeth , later one of her most important roles.

International breakthrough and career

Valayre made her debut in 1996 in the role of Elisabetta in Don Carlo in a guest appearance at the Teatro La Fenice Venice in Warsaw . This was followed within a few months by her role and house debut in Nabucco at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and her debut at London's Royal Albert Hall in Don Carlo.

In 1997 she was invited by La Scala in Milan to make her debut in the title role of Ponchielli's La Gioconda . Her debut in Milan was soon followed by others in famous concert halls and opera houses: Verdi's Jérusalem in Carnegie Hall New York, Nabucco in Zurich under Nello Santi as well as Aida , Tosca and Nabucco in the Arena of Verona , Macbeth in Paris and Tosca in Berlin. This was followed by her first performances at the Metropolitan Opera in Madama Butterfly in January 2000 . In the further course of the year 2000 she appeared on the side of Mario Malagnini and Bruna Baglioni as Aida in the Arena of Verona.

2001 took her to the Lyric Opera Chicago as Tosca , to Madrid with Verdi's Requiem , to Brussels ( La Monnaie ) with Macbeth , to Berlin for the title role in Aida and to Macerata as Norma .

Important appearances in 2002 were her first Chrysothemis ( Elektra ) in Madrid under Daniel Barenboim , Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera in New York under Daniel Oren and Salome in Washington DC under Heinz Fricke as well as at La Scala in Milan .

In September and October 2002 she returned to the Metropolitan Opera in New York to make her role debut as Maddalena in Andrea Chénier with Plácido Domingo and James Levine . This was followed by a new production of La Gioconda in Zurich under the musical direction of Nello Santi .

The 2003/04 season was followed by some important role debuts for Valayre, such as the role of Turandot in Berlin under Kent Nagano ; that of the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten , also in Berlin under Christian Thielemann , that of Minnie in La fanciulla del West in Zurich and her debut in the role of Amelia in Un ballo in maschera in Turin. Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera and the Vienna State Opera were among other important appearances this season. In August 2004 Valayre performed together with Plácido Domingo in the gala concert La corona di pietra in the Verona Arena .

In 2004/05 she was Salome with the Vienna Philharmonic and with the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, in Nabucco and Fedora at the Vienna State Opera , as Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera New York and in Washington DC, in one New production by Manon Lescaut in Zurich under Nello Santi and as Aida in the Caracalla Baths in Rome under the musical direction of Plácido Domingos .

In the 2005/06 season she was invited again by Placido Domingo to Washington DC to appear at his side as Fedora . Salome , Macbeth and Turandot at the State Opera Unter den Linden , Tosca in Zurich and Aida at the Vienna State Opera followed. She also appeared in important new productions such as Macbeth in Parma ( Festival Verdi ) under Bruno Bartoletti (including DVD production by TDK ) and Ernani in the Berlin Philharmonic .

In addition to La fanciulla del West and Andrea Chénier at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in autumn 2006, Sylvie Valayre was guest in the 2006/07 season as Manon Lescaut in Miami and in the role of Desdemona in Verdi's Otello at the Beethoven Festival in Warsaw. The season ended with a new production of Verdi's Macbeth at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the London Proms , both under the musical direction of Vladimir Jurowski .

Performances in 2007/08 included Tosca at the Paris Opera , Manon Lescaut in Genoa, Nabucco at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Turandot in Tel Aviv. In July 2008, Valayre also designed a major solo recital at the Musiques au coeur classical music festival in Antibes. In August 2008 she could be heard in two concerts with the Israel Symphony Orchestra in São Paulo, in which she performed Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs and the soprano part in Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

The central role of the 2008/09 season was the role of Turandot , played by Sylvie Valayre at the Semperoper Dresden, the Berlin State Opera and in Washington DC under the direction of Plácido Domingo . In the title role of Verdi's Aida in a new production by Peter Konwitschny she made her debut at the Leipzig Opera , was as Tosca at the San Diego Opera to hear as Lady Macbeth at the Semperoper Dresden and the Staatsoper Berlin.

In 2009/10 she performed as Abigaille in Verdi's Nabucco at the San Diego Opera , as Tosca at the Berlin State Opera , as Aida at the Leipzig Opera and made her role debut as Odabella in Giuseppe Verdi's Attila in Marseille. She made her debut at the Monte-Carlo Opera in the title role of Puccini's Turandot and opened the new Canton Opera House in China under the musical direction of Lorin Maazel .

In 2010/11 Sylvie Valayre returned to the Opéra Bastille in Paris as Giorgetta in Puccini's Il tabarro under the musical direction of Philippe Jordan . She could also be heard in a gala performance of Madama Butterfly in Mannheim as Cio-Cio San and made her debut at the Beijing Opera as Turandot and at the Copenhagen Opera as Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten .

In November 2011 she was heard for the first time as Carmen (opera) at the Ninon Vallin Festival.

In 2013 she sings a concert in London as well as her first Senta in The Flying Dutchman at the Montepulciano Festival.
