Symbio is a business process management software from Ploetz + Zeller GmbH u. a. for capturing, maintaining, releasing, providing and commenting on company images (or, to simplify, business processes ) with support for any ( Unicode ) languages on the user interface (German and English are constantly updated) and any (Unicode) languages for maintaining the company image (can be dynamically expanded at any time). Symbio is offered as a web-based version (Symbio Web) and as a desktop-based version (Symbio Client). Symbio Client is available under a free license (use restricted by a maximum of 20 process models). A free test environment for Symbio Web can be provided in the cloud on request.
Fields of application
Symbio was originally developed to design, maintain and publish the business processes of an organization - i.e. as classic business process modeling software . This already included options for recording
- Organizational units ( to document the place where a business process is performed),
- Roles (to identify the service providers and their responsibilities in the process steps),
- Inputs / Outputs (to name the work item in the process steps) and
- Application systems (in order to map the work equipment required for the process steps ).
Since then, Symbio has continuously developed its functionality and thus also its possible uses. By providing process cost accounting , process optimization based on calculated product costs and resource allocation could be determined and evaluated. Symbio was thus to a Business Process Management - Software .
In the meantime, Symbio has also mastered the design, maintenance and publication of organizational structures , system architecture and customer experience management including customer journeys as well as the recording of goals , key figures , risks , opportunities , measures, projects , milestones , products , requirements , solutions , trainings , skills , Learning units and standards . Symbio thus covers all requirements for a complete company mapping. Since 2019 it has been possible to document the system architecture largely compatible with the ArchiMate method.
In addition, Symbio is used to implement SAP systems with the SAP Solution Manager and / or the SAP Workforce Performance Builder . An integrated version management with a configurable approval workflow ensures the traceability of the company documentation at all times.
In addition to classic business process management , Symbio opens up further application possibilities such as quality management , enterprise architecture management as well as compliance and risk management . Symbio Web
Symbio Web is a completely browser- based application (all functions are only available in the web browser ) that was implemented with ASP.NET ( server ) and JavaScript ( client ). Business process management activities such as recording, maintenance, approval, provision, collaboration, etc. a. take place in a uniform web interface. The data is stored in a relational database system such as Microsoft SQL Server . Symbio Web can be hosted in the cloud or on premise . Symbio Web is compatible with all common browsers, including browsers on portable devices.
Symbio version management
Symbio Web integrates a version management system that supports the statuses in process , released , valid and expired . The status transitions are implemented using an integrated workflow that supports multi-level quality assurance and approval.
- The content of the company image in the status in progress cannot be generally viewed, but can be edited by the author application role. Multiple simultaneous versions of the same content of the corporate image in progress are supported. Company image content that is no longer required can be deleted.
- In the released state , the contents of the company image can be viewed in general. A validity date controls when the previously released version becomes invalid and is replaced by the new released version. Released content cannot be deleted and (with the exception of a few additional information) can no longer be changed.
- In the valid state , the contents of the company image are generally binding. Valid content cannot be deleted and (with the exception of a few additional information) no longer changed.
- The contents of the company image in the state expired cannot generally be viewed. This status archives the previously released content of the company image.
Symbio single sign-on
Symbio Web supports single sign-on (SSO) natively via Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) and can be linked to individual authentication and authorization systems. Access control via user name and password is possible, but is not recommended for corporate use due to the associated low level of security.
Symbio application roles
Symbio Web uses application roles and access rights to control user permissions.
- The application role deactivated is used to revoke all user permissions but to maintain the references to a user. Typical use case: An author , approver or architect who has left the company . However, a former viewer can be deleted.
- The Viewer application role is used to grant only read access to the content of the company image in the released state .
- The application role Author is used to enable the content of the company image to be changed in the state in progress .
- The Approver application role is used to support quality assurance and approval during the transition from the state in process to the state approved .
- The application role Analyst is used to evaluate the content of the company image, e.g. B. with reporting.
- The application role Architect is used to set up and change the structure of the company image.
- The application role Administrator is used to maintain the global configuration of Symbio Web authorizations , e.g. B. the user permissions.
From the author application role , the previous application role is automatically included.
Symbio offline export
As a completely browser- based application, Symbio Web requires an uninterrupted connection to the web server . For the purpose of long-term archiving and to support circumstances in which an uninterrupted connection to the web server cannot be guaranteed, the content of the company image can be exported in the released state and used offline on a PC.
Symbio Client (discontinued)
Symbio Client is either a file or database-based business process management system and can
- on a workstation computer with integrated / local data storage or
- be installed on several workstation computers ( clients ) with central data storage ( server ).
The process and organizational architectures ( organizational structure of a company) are recorded and managed centrally. The process modeling ( process organization of a company) takes place in tabular form on the basis of Microsoft Excel (processing offline / without access to the data memory is possible). When publishing are a modern html - Prozessweb and Microsoft Word compatible documents available.
General maintenance for Symbio Client , its components ( Symbio Architect , Symbio Modeling Client and Symbio Publishing ) and solutions based on them ( Symbio for ARIS and Symbio for SharePoint ) was discontinued on January 1, 2018. The successor product is Symbio Web .
Symbio Architect (discontinued)
In Symbio Architect , process architectures , organizational architectures and glossary elements can be easily recorded and managed using a database . In addition, the Symbio Architect synchronizes the data from the Symbio Modeling Client and generates process webs and / or documents using Symbio Publishing .
The discontinuation of general maintenance for Symbio Client on January 1, 2018 also includes Symbio Architect . The successor product Symbio Web integrates the functions of Symbio Architect .
Symbio Modeling Client (discontinued)
In Symbio Modeling client can process sequences are simply defined and detailed. The process flow is defined in tabular form based on Microsoft Excel and linked with glossary elements (e.g. organizational units, roles, systems, inputs, outputs, key figures, risks, etc.). Symbio Process Mining
The Symbio Process Mining collect and analyze process data from various IT systems. The user can use the process indicators for further analyzes and derive potential for improvement. The function offers around 150 evaluation criteria over new dimensions.
Symbio eden client
The Symbio eden Client is a maturity model at the organizational and process level and enables the collection and evaluation of key figures to determine the eden maturity level for process management in companies.
Symbio Cost Analysis
The Symbio Cost Analysis enables the calculation of costs and resource allocation on the basis of business processes .
Symbio eLearning
The Symbio eLearning is a bidirectional interface to SAP Workforce Performance Builder . It exports the hierarchical structure of the process map and imports the links to the eLearning units.
Symbio dashboard
The Symbio Dashboard enables the visualization of any key figures using SAP Crystal Dashboard Design and thus the creation of a management cockpit . It is embedded in Symbio Publishing (Web), but can also be easily integrated into existing company portals.
Symbio Visio Importer
The Symbio Visio Importer for Symbio Web enables the import of * .vsdx files, which were created with Microsoft Visio , as sub processes in Symbio.
Symbio Workshop Scanner

Symbio for ARIS
Symbio for ARIS is both a bi-directional interface to ARIS based on the XML file format of ARIS as an interactive user interface for remote control of Symbio also from the ARIS Toolset out.
The discontinuation of general maintenance for Symbio Client on January 1, 2018 also includes Symbio for ARIS .
The successor product Symbio Web only provides a unidirectional interface from ARIS to Symbio based on the XML file format from ARIS . With this interface, it has also become possible to merge two ARIS databases in a Symbio Storage. This is particularly helpful if - as is usual for large ARIS installations - a working database and a publication database exist and the contents of the working database as being processed are to be merged with the contents of the publications database as released . The merged content is then immediately available for version management .
Symbio for SharePoint uses SharePoint as a document management system for the versioning of the processes based on the Symbio Modeling Client s, integrates Symbio Publishing in SharePoint and uses specially configured SharePoint functions such as feedback and workflow.
In addition, SharePoint can be used as a document management system for external documents.
The discontinuation of general maintenance for Symbio Client on January 1, 2018 also includes Symbio for SharePoint . The successor product Symbio Web provides integrated versioning that not only includes the processes, but all content. SharePoint can still be used as a document management system for external documents .
License model
Symbio (Symbio Web and Symbio Client) is available as a 30-day trial version (limited to a maximum of 20 processes that can be recorded in Symbio) and as a volume license (the price is determined based on the number of employees in a company or division who use the technical requirements to have access to Symbio).
