The Münchner Symphoniker is a symphony orchestra founded in 1945 by Kurt Graunke in Munich .

history

The orchestra was founded in 1945 by Kurt Graunke as the Graunke Symphony Orchestra . It has had its current name since 1990. Graunke led the orchestra he founded until 1989, when Christoph Stepp took over the baton . From 1999 to 2006 Heiko Mathias Förster was chief conductor. From September 2006 to April 2013 Georg Schmöhe was chief conductor. Kevin John Edusei has held the position of chief conductor since the 2014/2015 season . Philippe Entremont has been the orchestra's honorary conductor since the 2004/2005 concert season . Ken-David Masur has been  the orchestra's first guest conductor since the 2011/12 season .

On September 25, 1945, the orchestra went public for the first time with a charity concert for the benefit of the Bavarian Red Cross . The following year the orchestra could also be heard on Radio Munich . The Graunke Symphony Orchestra has performed regularly in public since 1949. Today's Munich Symphony Orchestra play around 100 performances per year, including 26 concerts in four subscription series in the Munich Herkulessaal , in the Prinzregententheater and the Munich Philharmonic in Gasteig .

As an offshoot of the Münchner Symphoniker, the Munich Symphony Pops for upscale symphonic entertainment music was created in the 2003/04 season . The Munich Symphony Pops brand was discontinued in the 2008/2009 season. Since the 2008/2009 season, the orchestra has featured the Munich Angel of Peace in its logo and is nicknamed The Sound of Our City .

The classical-romantic orchestral repertoire is the focus for the Munich Symphony Orchestra. It is the aim of the orchestra to maintain tradition and at the same time create new listening experiences. Well-known soloists and up-and-coming young stars of the classical music scene are happy to guest as partners of the orchestra. Experienced conductors also stand next to those whose great careers have just begun on the conductor's podium.

The orchestra consists of 60 permanent musicians. The legal sponsor of the orchestra is the non-profit association Münchner Symphoniker eV. The orchestra is financially supported by the Free State of Bavaria, the Stadtsparkasse Munich, the district of Upper Bavaria and the federal government. The annual donation from the Stadtsparkasse will be reduced by € 150,000 per year from 2017. After 2019, the donation will be completely canceled. Substantial support is required to ensure the continued existence of the Münchner Symphoniker, and an application has been made in this regard to the Munich City Council.

Film music

Over the years, the Munich Symphony Orchestra has become known not only for their concert series but also for outstanding recordings of more than 500 film scores . So they played u. a. Ferde Grofé's Grand Canyon Suite to James Algars Grand Canyon (1958), Paul Sawtell 's music to Die Fliege (1958) , Hugo Friedhofer 's music to Bravados , (1962), Peer Raven's music to Rainer Werner Fassbinder's film Querelle (1982 ) and in the same year Christian Bruhn's symphonic soundtrack to Jack Holborn , but also American film scores such as Jerry Goldsmith's technically demanding, Oscar- nominated composition for The Wind and the Lion ( The Wind and the Lion 1975), Christopher Young's sweeping music for Hellraiser II ( Hellbound: Hellraiser II , 1988) and Howard Shore's background music for the psychological thriller The Silence of the Lambs ( The Silence of the Lambs , 1991). In English the orchestra was called Graunke Symphony Orchestra , later Munich Symphony Orchestra . At Easter 2017, the orchestra took part in the concert series for Lord of the Rings ( The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King , 2003) in Gasteig in cooperation with MünchenKlang and the Wolfratshauser Children's Choir. At the opening of the 36th Munich Film Festival 2018, they set Murnau's Faust - a German folk tale under the direction of Markus Huber .
