The former synagogue in Laudenbach , a district of Weikersheim in the Main-Tauber district , existed from the end of the 18th century until the time of National Socialism.

history

The exact date of construction of an older synagogue is unknown. On July 4, 1797, the application was made to build a new Jewish school. Accordingly, the old synagogue was threatened with collapse, a new building was considered inevitable. The building application was approved by the Würzburg bailiff in Niederstetten because he did not expect any objections from the Christian, predominantly Catholic community and various income could be lost if the supreme state rule was rejected. Nevertheless, there were objections and letters of protest from the Christian community. Ultimately, the construction was approved with the proviso that the synagogue is not near the church , the rectory , the main street, or any other street where processions pass. In addition, the building should not have the appearance of a church, which is why the synagogue was built like a private house.

The interior of the synagogue was almost completely destroyed by unknown perpetrators in the November pogroms in 1938 . The synagogue was later converted into a residential building. The substance of the synagogue building on Am Markt 3 ( ) has been preserved to this day. The lintel is still there, only the attic was renewed. Since 1998 a memorial plaque in front of the building has been reminding of the history of the former synagogue.
