The synagogue in Königheim , a municipality in the Main-Tauber district in the north-east of Baden-Württemberg, was built in 1887/88 and destroyed by tanks at the end of World War II.

history

In 1886 the synagogue, built in 1831, was completely destroyed by fire. The construction costs of a new synagogue were estimated at around 10,500 marks, with the insurance company only replacing 5600 marks for the burned down synagogue. The Jewish community Königheim consisted at that time of 24 households with a total of 104 people. A collection from Jewish communities in Baden raised part of the construction costs. In July 1886, site manager Keim from Königshofen drew up the plans and in the summer of 1888 the new building at the same location as the old synagogue was completed.

During the November pogroms in 1938 , the Königheim synagogue was looted and the Torah scrolls were burned on Sternplatz. The building then came into the possession of the Königheim community. In March 1945, when the American troops marched in, the building at Münzgasse 2 went up in flames due to tank shells and was completely destroyed.

The synagogue site was rebuilt with a savings bank branch. The building has now been converted into a residential building with a shop. A plaque commemorates the synagogue.
