history

Location of the former synagogue in Impfingen, Am Baumgarten 7

A prayer room was located on the second floor of Löb Ehrlich's house in the first half of the 19th century . A complaint was made in 1850 that this prayer room was more like an old chamber than a house of worship. The community longed for a synagogue , but this was not possible because most of the community members had little or no money. In addition, there was no ritual bath and no Israeli school, as it burned down in 1848. The community turned to the authorities, so on January 22, 1850, the Impfingen synagogue councilors Bärmann Gutmann and Fälklein Gutmann presented the community's concerns. The community wanted a house with a prayer room, a ritual bath , a school and a teacher's apartment. The report to the higher authorities on the plight of the Impfingen community was written on January 22nd, 1850 by the Tauberbischofsheim district office . The district office asked the Upper Council of Israelites and the government of the Lower Rhine District for a collection for the construction of the synagogue. This was approved by the Upper Council and passed it on to the Ministry of the Interior, which approved the application. Of the 1,424 guilders in the cost estimate, the insurance took over 295 guilders due to the burned down Israeli school. Since the square of the old school building was too narrow, the synagogue was built at Am Baumgarten 7 . The new synagogue was inaugurated on January 17, 1853. However, years later the congregation had to pay off the loan that was taken out to cover the remaining costs.
