The synagogue in Weikersheim , a town in the Main-Tauber district in the Franconian north-east of Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1824/25. The secular synagogue at Wilhelmstrasse 16 is a protected cultural monument .

history

In 1688 the first synagogue was built in Weikersheim and a rabbi was employed from 1697 .

The court agent Ezekiel Pfeiffer (1766–1827) had the new synagogue (back building at Wilhelmstrasse 16) and the later rabbinate house built as head of the Jewish community in Weikersheim in 1824/25. Church services were held in the Weikersheim synagogue until 1928 by the ever smaller Jewish community .

During the November pogrom of 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was demolished by foreign SA men. The building was preserved and served as a carpenter's shop. In the 1950s, a false ceiling was installed in the former synagogue. Above this, the flat plastered ceiling with stuccoed rosettes and a multi-colored painting with a starry sky has been preserved to this day.
