The former synagogue in Hochhausen next to Judengasse

The former synagogue in Hochhausen in the Main-Tauber district was built around 1770 and existed until 1914.

history

The synagogue is located in the "Judengasse" that is still preserved. It was built around 1770, but nothing is known about its construction history. There are also hardly any reports about the service in the Hochhausen synagogue. But Ulrich Gerhardt, who comes from Würzburg and teaches in Halle, tells in his diary notes of a visit by Schacharit on August 17, 1907 in Hochhausen. He described the former synagogue as small. There are six rolls that do not have any special jewelry. The Chasan was a teacher Stiefel from Mannheim at the time. The Torah was read out by a candidate for teacher training from Ettlingen , who lives in neighboring Impfingen . A Polish Jew also prayed, although it was noticeable that he was not wearing a prayer shawl . The service was celebrated according to the Jewish traditions of ancient Ashkenazi Minhag . Ulrich Gerhardt noticed that, according to an old rule that was no longer observed in many parishes, the Chasan still wore the prayer shawl on his shoulder at the beginning of the service and only put it on during the hymn Baruch she-amar . No Shema Yisrael was spoken when the Torah was being drawn up . The synagogue was still used until 1914 and then sold. The synagogue building was partially demolished in the following years and is now a warehouse.
