Synagogues in Wertheim
The former synagogues in Wertheim probably existed between the 14th century and the 20th century at two different locations in Wertheim in the Main-Tauber district . In total, the Jewish community in Wertheim had five synagogues during its 700-year history .
history
First and second synagogues
The location of the first two synagogues is described in a document from Count Johann I von Wertheim dated December 24, 1381. These were located in the Judengasse in Wertheim ( ⊙ ).
The first synagogue was probably destroyed during the persecution of the Jews at the time of the Black Death in 1349, and a new synagogue was built a few years later on the same site. This second synagogue was destroyed in 1447. The Marienkapelle, which is still in today's Kapellengasse, was built at this point until 1452.
Third and fourth synagogues
The third synagogue was built after the Jews were resumed in 1449 in the so-called bridge district near the pointed tower and the city wall. The fourth synagogue was built on the same site in 1592/93 ( ⊙ ).
Fifth synagogue
In 1798/99 the fifth synagogue was built again at the same location (between Gerbergasse 18 and Spitzem Turm). It was a relatively unadorned building. Services were held in the synagogue until 1938. Because many Jews had left the city, the Jewish community sold the building to the city in late summer 1938. This prevented cremation during the November pogrom in 1938 . However, the interior was devastated. Only the Torah scrolls and a few other cultural objects were brought to the town hall and were stored there until after the Second World War . After the end of the war, the Jewish asset management received the building and sold it to the city of Wertheim in 1949. The building was demolished at the end of February 1961 when the right Tauberstraße was being expanded. Since 1976 a memorial plaque has been commemorating the former synagogue.
