Szigetköz

The Small Schüttinsel ( Hungarian Szigetköz , Slovak Malý Žitný ostrov ) is an island that is formed by the main stream of the Danube and the Moson Danube . The larger part of the island is on Hungarian territory , the northern smaller part on Slovak territory. Administratively, the island is in Győr-Moson-Sopron County , the Slovak part belongs to Okres Dunajská Streda , Trnavský kraj .

In contrast to the large Schüttinsel , the small Schüttinsel is on the right side of the Danube. It begins at river kilometer 1854, is 52.5 km long and 6 to 8 km wide. Their area is 375 km².

The island is not only divided into two parts by the two states, it also does not represent a single unit. While the southern Hungarian part has existed for thousands of years and is accordingly populated, the northern part was actually only created through the construction of the Gabčíkovo power station . As a result of the power plant construction, the Danube was relocated to a new river bed in the interior of Slovakia and the part between the dam area of the Danube and the power plant canal was added to the small pouring island.

The island was created by the sedimentation of the Danube, which breaks through just above the Hainburger Pforte . Due to the flat course of the island it is on the one hand often flooded, on the other hand by many smaller rivers with a total length of 200 kilometers. Many places have already been rebuilt several times in different places after floods or have remained deserted that are only reminiscent of field names. Major floods occurred in 1242, 1426, 1760, 1809, 1845, 1850, 1862, 1883. The last major flood was in 1954.

In the 19th century, numerous flood protection structures were erected, but these could not meet the requirements. Between 1853 and 1883 alone, 18 dam breaches with corresponding floods were recorded.

It was not until the 20th century that dykes , which were not piled up directly on the river bank as usual, but further inland, succeeded in achieving flood protection while still maintaining large areas of the floodplain landscape. The island serves as a breeding ground for migratory birds and forms a retreat for wild animals (e.g. deer). There are also various types of plants that cannot be found in either country.

Large parts of the Schüttinsel have been under nature protection since 1987. The Szigetköz National Park is also planned on the island.
