TSOL (sometimes also spelled TSOL ) is an American hardcore band that has existed (with interruption) from 1979 until today. The band name is an abbreviation for True Sounds of Liberty ; the band comes from the same scene as Bad Religion , the Circle Jerks and the Adolescents, among others . TSOL went through some significant style changes, for which the many line-up changes are responsible. Individual releases are assigned to the styles Heavy Metal , Art-Punk and Gothic Punk . Bands like Good Riddance , Tiger Army and Blitzkid name TSOL as an influence.

Band history

prehistory

The later founding members of TSOL lived in Huntington Beach in the late 1970s and played in various bands as teenagers, including SS Cult and Johnny Coat Hanger and the Abortions . In 1979 the group Vicious Circle was founded, in which singer Jack Grisham, drummer Todd Barnes, guitarist Steve Houston and bassist Laddy Terrell played. After repeated outbreaks of violence when this band performed and Grisham escaped to Alaska in the course of an escalation , Vicious Circle was at an end.

TSOL

Together with the returning Grisham (who also used the pseudonyms Jack Delauge , Alex Morgan and Jack Greggors ) guitarist Ron Emory, bassist Mike Roche and drummer Todd Barnes formed TSOL . Initially, the band played concerts in the region, often together with groups of friends from the area, but also with The Damned from England and the Dead Kennedys from San Francisco . The performances attracted attention, among other things, through the face painting of the musicians. The song material that the band wrote during this time was found on the first, self-titled EP and on the 1981 debut album Dance With Me , which was produced by Thom Wilson (later producer for DOA and The Offspring, among others ). Already between these two works the group is attested to a first change of style, as they moved away from political content and moved closer to the Misfits through their choice of topic and sound . The next release Weathered Statues appeared on Jello Biafra's label Alternative Tentacles . 1982 appeared with Beneath The Shadows (also produced by Wilson) the first album with keyboardist Greg Kuehn. Todd Scrievener replaced Barnes on drums here.

In 1983 Jack Grisham left the band and was replaced by his brother-in-law Joe Wood . With Kuehn and Wood the style of TSOL changed further towards Gothic Punk and Glam Rock , which led to the fact that the following albums were compared with works by The Cult , AC / DC and Guns N 'Roses . TSOL went on tour with the latter as well as with the Red Hot Chili Peppers ; Emory left the group, leaving Mike Roche only a founding member. However, Roche also left the band in 1990.

The original members had since revived TSOL in the original line-up, which led to conflicts with Wood and the drummer Mitch Dean, who now held the rights to the name. In 1991 a live album by the original line-up was released under the name of the band members. While the "original" TSOL members were prevented from continuing their careers by drug problems, Wood and his musicians lost their record deal.

1999 saw a comeback when the original formation regained the rights to the name and TSOL played the Warped Tour . Todd Barnes had died of a brain aneurysm that year and was replaced by Jay O'Brien. In 2001 and 2003 new albums were released on Nitro Records , and they also toured Europe for the first time, with headlining concerts as well as appearances as part of the Deconstruction tour . In 2006 the band decided to take a break because Rouche and Emory had left California. In 2007, however, concerts were held again within the USA. In January 2009 the band released a free downloadable album produced by David Bianco.

Outside of TSOL

Jack Grisham sang shortly after leaving Cathedral of Tears , which only released one EP . This was followed by three albums with Tender Fury before he sang in the group The Joykiller from 1995 , in which Ron Emory was also active. The group released three albums on Epitaph Records . Todd Barnes played with the Vandals for some time . In addition to Beneath The Shadows (1982) and Divided We Stand from 2003, Greg Kuehn also played on albums by Berlin ( Count Three and Pray , 1986) and The Church ( Starfish , 1988).

In 2003, Grisham stood in California in the election to succeed Governor Gray Davis , but lost to Arnold Schwarzenegger with 2200 votes as 37th of 159 candidates . In the election campaign, he had stated that the reason for his candidacy was that he could not afford health insurance.

In 2011, Grisham published An American Demon: A Memoir .
