TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard is a documentary directed by Simon Klose that was released on February 8, 2013. It is about the lawsuit against the three founders of The Pirate Bay . Filming began in the summer of 2008 and was completed on August 25, 2012.

action

The three founders of The Pirate Bay - Peter Sunde aka brokep, Fredrik Neij aka Tiamo and Gottfrid Svartholm aka Anakata - have been charged with copyright infringement in the Stockholm District Court . You can see excerpts from the negotiation and film recordings between the negotiation sessions.

In a scene in court it is asked why Neij did not respond to the rights holder's requests . He says that for him the emails that he forwarded to Sunde and Svartholm were spam . Svartholm, on the other hand, says that he answered the first hundred emails in a friendly manner and then lost patience. "Go fuck yourself" was his answer. Ultimately, the users themselves are responsible for the content of the files exchanged.

After the founders were convicted in April 2009, they go to the appeals court, where they will be convicted again in November 2010 . Neij went to prison for ten months, Sunde for eight months and Lundström for four months. The fine is 46 million kroner (3.3 million euros). The case against Svartholm had been severed on appeal because he could not appear for health reasons. He was in Cambodia at the time . A display announced that in February 2012 the Swedish Supreme Court finally dismissed the renewed appeal.

In short interviews, participants from the other side also have their say and present their point of view. The locations of The Pirate Bay servers and part of the private lives of the founders can also be seen.

AFK - Away From Keyboard is used in the film instead of IRL - In Real Life because the three of them consider the Internet to be "real".

financing

The film was funded by: Sveriges Television (SVT) , Norsk rikskringkasting (NRK) , Danmarks Radio (DR) , BBC , Arte / ZDF , Film i Skåne, Swedish Film Institute , Danish Film Institute , Norwegian Film Institute, Fritt Ord and by crowdfunding .

A Kickstarter campaign was launched on August 27, 2010 with the goal of raising $ 25,000. The goal was achieved after just three days. By the end of the fundraising period on September 27, 2010, a total of $ 51,424 had been raised from 1,737 donors.

In February 2011, Klose received an additional 200,000 Swedish kronor ($ 31,325) from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee of the Swedish Ministry of Culture.

From February 8, 2013, the film was offered for download on the film website on a voluntary basis (US $ 10). On the first day there were around 2,000 paid downloads with a return of over 22,000 US dollars. As of September 2, 2013, there were 3,429 paid downloads for a total of $ 48,987.

publication

The film opened the Panorama Documents section at the Berlin International Film Festival on February 8, 2013 . At the same time, the film was also available for download on The Pirate Bay and for streaming on YouTube . The complete film was released under the Creative Commons license BY-NC-ND on The Pirate Bay and other BitTorrent sites. There is also the option of buying the film as a download or DVD in order to support the producer.

Another version was released for remixes of the film, in which copyright-restricted material was removed. This version is four minutes shorter and under the CC license BY-NC-SA.

The broadcaster ARTE produced a German dubbed version , which was broadcast for the first time on April 2, 2013 as part of a theme evening. This version is 81 minutes long and also includes some Internet terms such as BitTorrent or IRC in German and French. The CC license BY-NC-ND can also be seen at the end of the film.

reception

Peter Sunde wrote in a blog article that he saw the film divided. On the one hand, the film is technically well made, on the other hand, the film is too dramatic. The cameraman Simon Klose is a good friend of Sunde, but the film editor does not know Sunde, which means that some scenes are shown in a wrong light. He cites two examples: In one scene he sweated “like a pig”, which in the film looks as if the thing is getting him psychologically. In another scene, Fredrik Neij says the appeal judgment is not on the BBC and CNN homepage . Neij did not mean this seriously, especially since the message appeared a few minutes later on the home pages of the two news channels, which is not mentioned in the film. Sunde also criticized the film for focusing too much on the process.

Immediately after it appeared, American film studios tried to have the documentation deleted from the search results on Google . However, neither 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Viacom or Lions Gate had the necessary rights to legally remove the film from search engine providers or file hosts via DMCA . In August 2013, Google spokesman David Mothander contacted Simon Klose and promised to restore the deleted links. He explained the delay with the fact that his response mail to Klose's counter-motion got stuck in the outbox.
