geography

Daejeon is the fifth largest city in South Korea with 1,539,154 inhabitants. It lies between the provinces of Chungcheongbuk-do and Chungcheongnam-do and is the capital of Chungcheongnam-do (shortened to: Chungnam), although it is politically an independent entity.

The city is completely enclosed by wooded hills; Daejeon can be hiked on well-developed paths. The Yuseong District is located in the northwest of Daejeon and is known for its hot springs. The main campus of Chungnam National University is also located here .

history

Until the end of Greater Korea (1910) Daejeon was a small village.

Korea was part of the Japanese Empire between 1910 and 1945 . Since Japanese was the official language at that time, the city name 大田 Japanese Taiden was read.

The city developed after it was connected to the railroad in 1914.

On September 14, 1948, a serious railway accident occurred 15 miles north of Daejeon : A passenger train ran into another train. 40 people died and 60 were also injured. Most of the dead were US soldiers.

During the Korean War , Daejeon was temporarily the capital of South Korea. Around 70% of the city was completely destroyed as a result.

In July 1950 the Battle of Daejeon took place.

Daejeon grew after the Korean War as a center of textile, mechanical engineering and chemical industries. In 1993 the world exhibition took place in Daejeon. The EXPO bridge was built for the occasion. For the soccer World Cup 2002 three games took place in the newly built Daejeon World Cup Stadium .

traffic

Today the city is an important railway junction. The state railway company KORAIL is headquartered in Daejeon.

A subway line has been in operation in Daejeon since 2007 .
