The Emilio San Martín district is located in the Requena Province in the Loreto region in northeastern Peru . The district was established on The district was named after Emilio San Martín Peña (1861-1880), a naval officer who fell in the Saltpeter War. The district area is 4641 km². The 2017 census counted 6,769 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 6047, in 2007 it was 6911. The district administration is located in the 120  m high village of Tamanco with 1823 inhabitants (as of 2017). Tamanco is located 94 km southwest of the provincial capital Requena .

Geographical location

The Emilio San Martín district is located in the Amazon basin in the center of the Requena province. The right arm of the Río Ucayali crosses the north of the district in a northeastern direction. The catchment area of the Río Guanache , right tributary of the Río Ucayali, forms the southern part of the district.

The Emilio San Martín district borders on the Maquía district in the west, the Puinahua district in the northwest , the Capelo district in the north, the Tapiche district in the northeast and the Alto Tapiche district in the east .
