Tancua is a village in the French department of Jura in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . The formerly independent municipality was incorporated into Morbier on January 1, 2007 .
geography
Tancua is located at 890 m , 4 km west of Morez and about 17 km northeast of the city of Saint-Claude (as the crow flies). The village extends in the Jura , in a panoramic location on a terrace on a sunny slope around 250 m above the deeply cut river of the Bienne , south of the Forêt de la Joux Devant .
The area of the 6.74 km², former municipal area comprised a section of the French Jura. The southern border ran along the Bienne, which flows here in an erosion valley parallel to the Jura chains to the southwest. From the course of the river, the community area extended northward over the relatively steep slope of Tancua to the adjacent plateau of the Forêt de la Joux Devant . This mountain range, which forms an anticline of the Jura folds and shows a characteristic karst topography with above-ground drainage-free hollows and sinkholes , is occupied by an extensive forest area. At 1110 m , the highest point in Tancua is reached on the top of Les Aplanets . The Tancua area is part of the Haut-Jura Regional Nature Park (French: Parc naturel régional du Haut-Jura ).
Neighboring communities of Tancua were Morbier in the north, Morez in the east, La Mouille in the south and Lézat and Grande-Rivière in the west.
history
In the Middle Ages, Lézat, Tancua and Les Mouillés (hamlets between the two places) formed a common parish that was separated from the spacious parish of La Rixouse and subordinated to the priory of Saint-Lupicin . The abbots of Saint-Claude exercised the jurisdiction. Later, forges and nail factories were built on the Bienne, whose workers cultivated the surrounding plots for self-sufficiency.

With 151 inhabitants (2004) Tancua was one of the small communities in the Jura department. After the population had decreased markedly in the first half of the 20th century (303 people were still counted in 1911), the population increased again, especially at the end of the 1970s. Since then, the population has remained relatively constant. The municipality was assigned the INSEE code 39524.
Economy and Infrastructure
Until well into the 20th century, Tancua was predominantly a village characterized by agriculture , in particular cattle and dairy farming, and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.
The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a departmental road that leads from Morbier to La Rixouse .
