Telephone code (East Timor)

The telephone area code numbers of East Timor specify the phone numbers for the individual communities in the country to begin. The country code for East Timor is +670.

history

In 1912 there was already a telephone network in Portuguese Timor that linked the individual military posts in the colony. The international code was +672. The infrastructure remained poor, however, until the Indonesian occupation (1975-1999), in which the network was expanded, but suffered severe damage as a result of the wave of violence in 1999 around the independence referendum . During the occupation, East Timor was integrated into Indonesia's telephone system and could be reached using the country code +62, followed by the area codes for the two largest cities, Dili (390) and Baucau (399).

After the Indonesians had left and the United Nations took over the interim administration for East Timor , the country code +670 was introduced in early 2000, previously used by the Northern Mariana Islands . However, they introduced the United States' telephone prefix in 1997 , so that the telephones there can now be reached via +670.

In 2010, 54.3% of households (86.3% in cities, 43.2% in rural areas) had a telephone, be it a landline or a mobile phone. The current definition of the telephone number system was introduced in 2013 by the Ministry of Transport and Communication.

Landline numbers

Landline numbers consist of seven digits, with the first two defining the municipality. They were introduced on September 28, 2003. The numbers in the west of East Timor start with a 2 , in the center with a 3 and in the east with a 4 . Telephone numbers for government agencies in Dili start with 333 .

Connections that existed before 2013 had phone numbers with six digits. With the change in the system, a 3 was added after the regional number. No telephone number is followed by a 1 , 7 , 8 or 9 after the two regional digits .
