Germany from Above is a Terra-X documentary series. The ZDF series by Petra Höfer and Freddie Röckenhaus , which largely depicts Germany's geography with aerial photographs (the so-called “aerials”), was broadcast for the first time in 2010. The respective seasons are divided according to the themes of city, country and river.
The series had an average of five million viewers during the first season. Germany from above was nominated for the German Television Award 2010 in the category “Best Reportage” and for the Grimme Award 2011. In 2011 the series received the special prize of the German Camera Prize .
The title song comes from Steve Jablonsky's album for the first Transformers film and is called "The Autobots Arrival to Earth". All seasons are moderated from off by the voice actor Leon Boden .
Content and production
The production of the individual seasons took one year each. The bird's eye view was taken with the help of helicopters , ultralight and powered aircraft . The first season aired in May 2010 and the second season started in May 2011.
After the success of the first season, four extended episodes with unsent material were produced for ZDFneo in 2010 : Stadt I + II and Land I + II.
The first season shows u. a. the development and growth of Berlin from 1800 during industrialization to the city of 4 million inhabitants around 1920, the sights of Berlin , the Theresienwiese in Munich during the Oktoberfest , the emergence of Dortmund at the intersection of two trading routes in the Middle Ages , the skyline of Frankfurt and accompanies two parachutists jumping from a skyscraper, the Limes , Munich and Frankfurt am Main airports , the most important waterways , the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site , the port and warehouse district of Hamburg .
The second season shows u. a. historic planned cities such as Karlsruhe , Mannheim and Freudenstadt , the rebuilt old town and Frauenkirche in Dresden and accompanies a zeppelin on its flight over Frankfurt am Main .
A similar documentary called Britain from Above aired on the BBC in 2008 . The Dutch broadcasting organization VPRO has been broadcasting the documentary “Nederland van boven” since December 2011, based on the same model .
On June 7, 2012, the cinema version Germany started from above . This is not structured according to city / country / river, but leads chronologically through the individual months of the year. Directed by Freddie Röckenhaus and Petra Höfer .
In 2016, the 60-minute special episode "A Winter Tale" was broadcast with winter footage from the country.
