Tetjana Mykolaiiwna Tschornowol ( Ukrainian Тетя́на Микола́ївна Чорново́л ; born June 4, 1979 in Kiev , Ukrainian SSR ), is a Ukrainian journalist , activist and politician . She was appointed government commissioner for anti-corruption issues in the Yatsenyuk I cabinet and was a founding member of the Popular Front party .

biography

Tetjana Mykolaiivna Chornovol was born on June 4, 1979 in Kiev. She currently lives in the village of Hora .

She started her journalistic career at the age of 16. Among other things, she wrote in the feature area of the Ukrainian news magazine “PiC” .

At the age of 17 she joined the UNA-UNSO and in 2001 took part in her protests in the course of the “Ukraine without Kuchma ” campaign. When the UNA-UNSO later negotiated with the authorities, Chornovol saw this as a “betrayal of the principles” and left the party .

After the Orange Revolution , she began investigative writing about corruption in Ukraine . She wrote as a freelancer for the newspapers “Livyy Bereh” , “Obozrevatel” and Ukrajinska Prawda ”, among others . Her best-known reports relate to her research into the financing of Viktor Yanukovych's residence Meschyhirja, carried out from 2006 onwards . On March 30, 2007, Rinat Akhmetov filed a lawsuit against the online edition of The Observer with the High Court of Justice in London, alleging that Chornovol's articles were alleged to have slandered his childhood and adolescence.

On the night of August 24, 2012, Chornovol broke into the Meschyhirjas compound and spent hours there taking photos with her cell phone until she was finally arrested by the security guards. Chornovol ran unsuccessfully in the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2012 as a member of the All-Ukrainian Association "Fatherland" . She succumbed to a number of acts of sabotage during the election campaign. One of her rivals in her constituency, UDAR MP Yaroslav Dubnevych , carried out a public relations campaign against Chornovol, which resulted in a local newspaper reading that Chornovol had worked as a prostitute when she was young . In addition, the tires of her vehicle were stabbed by an unknown person. Another stranger poured a bucket of green paint over her in a stairwell.

On May 26, 2013, Chornovol and two other activists occupied a construction crane to protest against the privatization of the Hostynyj Dwir . On August 16, 2013, Chornovol and four other activists occupied the Kiev City Council building to "draw attention to the illegitimacy of the Kiev City Council".

Euromaidan

During the Euromaidan events , Chornovol sided with the opposition. On November 25, 2013, Chornovol and other opposition supporters attacked a van they believed was a surveillance vehicle. Chornovol climbed onto the car and smashed the skylight. In the vehicle were SBU employees who used the van for "standard anti-terrorism precautions". Chornovol was arrested on December 1 after she and other demonstrators tried to break the windows of the mayor's office and break into the building. On December 6th, Chornovol led a march on Meschyhirja .

On the evening of December 24, Chornovol posted a photo on her blog that she claimed was of the out-of-town residence of then Interior Minister Vitaly Sakharchenko . The following night, she said her car was pushed into a black SUV on her way home. The occupants of the vehicle then pulled her out and beat her. Police officers found her lying next to her car shortly after midnight and had her taken to the hospital. In response, hundreds of journalists and members of the opposition protested in front of the Interior Ministry. President Yanukovych condemned the attack and asked the Interior Ministry to find the perpetrators. The attack was also condemned by Petro Poroshenko , Vitali Klitschko , the OSCE and the United States Department of State, among others .

Five men were arrested during the investigation. Several prominent people are suspected of the robbery, including the Klitschko brothers, according to the Interior Ministry. Vitali Klitschko then denied the allegations on his party's website and announced that he would sue the head of the Interior Ministry's investigative department, Mykola Chynchyn, for defamation. Due to her serious injuries, Chornovol was only able to leave the hospital on January 7, 2014.

Political career

On March 5, Chornovol was appointed government commissioner for anti-corruption policy in the Yatsenyuk I cabinet . According to the Right Sector , Chornovol met him on behalf of the government two weeks before Oleksandr Musychko's death. She recommended that he leave the country for a few months and offered him $ 20,000 in return . In April she presented a new draft law on the establishment of a "National Service to Fight Corruption."

On August 19, she resigned from her post on the grounds that “there is no political will in Ukraine to carry out an uncompromising, extensive war against corruption”. Among other things, she accused the Attorney General of not making arrests and instead hindering work, and alleged that the anti-corruption committee did not take action against large companies. The death of her husband ( see section "Private" ) also played a role in her decision.

On September 4, 2014, Chornovol was appointed advisor to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry. Chornovol was a founding member of the Popular Front party and was in second place in the 2014 parliamentary elections in Ukraine .

Private

Tschornowol has two children. Her husband Mykola Berezovyj fought on the side of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Azov Battalion volunteer combat unit during the crisis in Ukraine and fell on August 10, 2014.
