action

Summer 1922: Thérèse Larroque and Anne are best friends and spend the summer together again. At that time, Anne already knew that Thérèse would one day marry her older brother Bernard Desqueyroux. In April 1928 the time had come: the wealthy Larroque and Desqueyroux families were united through the marriage of Thérèse and Bernard. Thérèse does not love her husband, but has no choice. She tells him that she is only marrying him because of his property. Both spend their honeymoon in Baden-Baden , where Thérèse receives letters from Anne. Anne tells her that she has fallen in love with the young Jean Azevedo. This is despised by her family, as the Azevedos are considered Portuguese Jews. Anne believes that Thérèse will help her, but after her hasty return home, she remains silent and hides from Anne that letters from Jeans have long since been intercepted by the housemaids. Thérèse, who is pregnant, persuades Anne to travel to Biarritz with her mother . In her absence, she seeks out Jean, who, to her surprise, is not particularly interested in Anne and sees their relationship as more of a flirtation. Thérèse gets Jean to write Anne at least one loving farewell letter. Anne believes that Thérèse Jean dictated the letter and turns away from Thérèse.

Thérèse gave birth to a daughter named Marie in late autumn 1928. She has no emotions for her daughter, who is being looked after by Anne more and more often. Bernard often has heart problems and begins on the advice of his doctor, because anemia arsenic drops to take. In the summer of 1929 a forest fire shook the region. Thérèse has become more and more silent and phlegmatic in the confines of her house and does not warn Bernard when he takes a double dose of arsenic drops due to the excitement about the forest fire. Shortly thereafter, Bernard felt bad and kept vomiting. The doctor who was called is at a loss. Thérèse, in turn, begins to give Bernard a higher dose of the arsenic drops in a targeted manner. She also forged a prescription in order to get more arsenic from the pharmacy. When Bernard is paralyzed by the poisoning, a specialist is called in. Thérèses deed becomes obvious when the pharmacist also recognizes the falsified prescription.

Bernard's family charges Thérèse, who is separated from her husband and daughter. In order not to endanger the social position, both spouses state that Thérèse received the fake prescription from a stranger and redeemed it for him; Bernard, on the other hand, misjudged the intake dose. The process is discontinued. Since a divorce is socially out of the question for Bernard, Thérèse is held like a prisoner, is not allowed to leave her room and is only allowed to appear in public at mass with Bernard. Thérèses foster-aunt Clara, who was the young woman's last stop, dies. When Thérèse is rumored to be suffering from depression, Bernard leaves the property, leaving Thérèse in the company of his two employees. Thérèse lets himself go, eats little, smokes a lot and loses weight. She doesn't leave her room. One day Bernard and his family announce themselves with Anne and her future husband. He insisted on getting to know Thérèse before getting married. Although the staff nurses Thérèse, she presents a terrifying picture when she visits. Bernard realizes that he needs to take more care of Thérèse. He promises to release her after Anne's wedding. Thérèse finally goes to Paris. She's feeling better; she speaks to Bernard in a café. She has no precise explanation for what she did, only that she did not want to fulfill her socially imposed role.
