Thailand Premier League 1996/97
From 1916-1995 the Kor Royal Cup was the top division in Thai football. From 1996 the Thailand Premier League replaced the Kor Royal Cup as the top division. From 1996 to 1998 the Premier League was called the Johnnie Walker Thailand Soccer League .
The first season of the TPL consisted of 18 clubs. The top four at the end of the season qualified for the championship finals.
The last 6 teams had to relegate to the Thailand Division 1 League introduced in 1997 .
Defending champion, from the Kor Royal Cup was the Thai Farmers Bank which could not defend their title.
