The Darkness is an American horror film from the year 2016 by Greg McLean . The leading roles are Kevin Bacon , Radha Mitchell , David Mazouz and Lucy Fry . The film takes up Indian myths about the Anasazi .

The Taylor family goes camping in the Grand Canyon with their friends, the Carter family . Michael, the autistic son of Bronny and Peter Taylor, finds five stones with characters in a cave and puts them in his pocket.
Back at home, Michael begins to behave strangely. B. his room. The wildlife in the area is also acting strange. The whole family hears noises in the house and handprints appear on mirrors and walls. Bronny Taylor begins research and finds out that, according to legend, the Anasazi Indians banished demons to stones. These stones were then hidden in caves. However, if these stones are removed, the demons can escape and take the form of a wolf , snake , coyote , crow, and buffalo . As soon as these demons escape, "The Darkness" comes over the world. This curse can only be broken if the stones are put back in their place by a person who is not afraid. Peter doesn't believe her, and she starts drinking again.
The situation escalates more and more: Stephanie, Michael's sister, is attacked first by the neighbour's dog, then by the demons. Peter finds a coyote in Michael's tree house and sees the shadow of a demon at Stephanie's window. Michael locked himself in the bathroom. When Peter breaks the door, he finds him sitting on the floor, the walls and the ceiling are smeared with drawings of demons. The family then leaves the house and stays in a hotel.
Peter receives the telephone number of Teresa Morales from his boss Simon, who is doing spiritual healing. Teresa appears at the Taylors' house with her granddaughter Gloria, who serves as her translator. The two begin to cleanse the house of the demons. During the purification, they are attacked by the demons and easily injured. Meanwhile, Michael secretly goes to his room. He steps through the burn mark, which turns out to be a portal, into the cave in which the stones were kept. There he is expected by the five demons, Peter follows him and tries to put the stones back in their place, but because of his fear he does not succeed. He then offers himself as a replacement for his son, which the demons accept. Michael can put the stones back, whereupon the demons disappear and the two can escape back into their house through the slowly closing portal.

The Darkness was the first directorial work in Hollywood for Australian Greg McLean . According to him, the film is based on a true story told firsthand to him many years earlier. Greg McLean also wrote the script with Shayne Armstrong and Shane Krause . On June 2, 2014, the film composer Johnny Klimek was hired to compose the music for the film.
