action

John Ottway works as a hunter at a remote Alaskan oil well, protecting workers from attacks by wild animals. After the death of his wife, he is deeply disappointed in his life and on the last day of his service is about to attempt suicide . The next day he goes on the return flight with other workers from the oil company. Shortly after taking off, your machine crashes in an icy wilderness. The few survivors initially settle in the aircraft wreck. During the night, one of the survivors is killed by wolves without the others noticing. Ottway explains that the wolf pack must have a cave somewhere around that it sees threatened. If they move away, the wolves should leave them alone. However, it would be problematic if they ran towards the cave, as this would drive the wolves to an even more aggressive behavior. However, since no rescue is to be expected, it is decided to march on the next morning.

The six remaining head south to escape the ice landscape. Ottway previously took the wallets of all the dead with the intention of sending them to their families later. After some time of marching, Todd, who walks a little away from the group, is attacked and killed by wolves. When the group is attacked again at nightfall, they run into a forest and light several fireplaces there to protect themselves from the wolves. There you have your first encounter with the creepy lead wolf. Shortly after this disappears again, another wolf attacks Diaz and injures him slightly before the others can kill the wolf. They grill and eat the animal. Ottway leads the group through the forest. Burke freezes to death in a snow storm. In the morning the group comes to the edge of a high cliff. When trying to let himself off the cliff with an improvised rope, the rope snaps near Talget and he falls to the ground, where he is killed by wolves.

The three remaining survivors come to a river, where Diaz loses his courage to live and remains behind. That leaves only John Ottway and Pete Hendrick. The wolves attack again, with Hendrick falling into the river, being swept away by the current and being trapped under a tree trunk under water and drowning. In a clearing, Ottway puts down the wallets he had previously taken from the dead, as well as his own, and puts a tracking device on them. Only now does he notice that he is right next to the wolf cave. He is surrounded by wolves, but these are called back by the lead wolf. When he remembers a scene where he and his wife are in bed, it becomes clear that she died of an illness. Ottway prepares for the final fight. After the credits you can see the breathing lead wolf lying on the ground and the back of John Ottway's head leaning against it. The fate of the two remains unclear.

criticism

“The clever staging and convincing actors make the adventure story increasingly permeable and condense it into a meditation on loss and death; thus the film deviates from the usual clichés of the action genre in a serious way. "

“Man versus nature, that is a scenario that is as well known as it is popular in literature and film. What happens when survival instincts are awakened, when what was previously mastered by superior technology suddenly strikes back mercilessly? Joe Carnahan's thriller has a clear answer to this: Only alpha animals have a chance. Anyone who hesitates and lets himself be captivated by his fears is as good as dead. Survival of the fittest. The view of group dynamic processes in the face of an existential threat is only part of the appeal of “The Gray”. Especially since some of the characters (the aggressive, the sensitive, the silent, the fearful) are more woodcut-like. What is convincing is the enormous pace that the story picks up once the wolf pack gets into the bloody game. There are scenes that are far above the usual animal horror level and that get your pulse racing. Cinematographer Masanobu Takayanagi did just as good a job as the editing team Roger Barton and Jason Hellman - pure adrenaline. "

“'The Gray' may not be on par with the great classics of the existentialist death-loving men's cinema brand Peckinpah , but not far from it. And it deserves some respect for how stylishly and consistently Carnahan finds his way back from the motley and heartily irrelevant action of the 'A-Team' film to the form of efficient no-nonsense cinema in which he was part 10 years ago his great cop thriller ' Narc ' was successful. It is obvious that he is more concerned with the mythopoetic qualities of genre cinema than with a comprehensively realistic representation of a drastically existential experience of nature. "

Trivia

The film briefly relates to the film Survival! taken, which was based on a true story . John Ottway and the rest of the survivors are initially in a similar situation as in the mentioned film.
