action
The Japanese representative of a trading company Kōhei Hayasaka ends up, apparently innocent, because of the possession of a kilo of heroin in an overcrowded detention center in the Philippine capital Manila , where he is incarcerated until the start of the trial. In the prison he was given preferential treatment as a newcomer from abroad and placed in a small communal cell with other compatriots, who, after the mutual distrust had been overcome, welcomed him in a friendly manner. However, Kōhei's hopes of an early release dwindle when his lawyer reveals that he can only escape conviction with bribes.
Through a cellmate, he gets to know the aging gangster Yoshida, who adopts the prevailing law of corruption and buys extensive freedom of action and freedom of action as well as luxury with money. Thanks to this donation of money, the old criminal is even able to do various “drug deals” from his cell. Yoshida also chooses the prison, which he can leave at any time, as a safe refuge from vengeful members of his Yakuza clan, who have been trying to kill him since betraying him. In order to minimize his own risk, Yoshida secures the services of the smart and righteous Kōhei as a foreign drug courier.
After Kōhei meets the imprisoned realtor Nami Mishima, he leaves his old life behind, separates from his faithless wife Miyuki and surrenders to his fate. He becomes increasingly entangled in Yoshida's dubious machinations, while he is sentenced to life imprisonment for his drug offenses. After the Yakuzas determine the whereabouts of Yoshida and at the same time the Filipino inmates rebel against the better-off inmates, Yoshida flees the correctional facility with five other Japanese. On their escape, Kōhei and Nami discover mutual feelings and a tender love affair develops. Ultimately, they end up in an impoverished jungle village, where they are caught by the well-armed yakuzas, who cause a bloodbath and slaughter two fugitive Japanese. The murderers then disappeared without a trace, so that the remaining four can bury their comrades. At the end of the film, Kōhei decides to return to prison with Yoshida and Nami. Years later he becomes the new President of the Philippines under the name Mandini.
