Not Guilty (Original title: The Juror ) is an American feature film from 1996 with Demi Moore and Alec Baldwin in the lead roles. Directed by Brian Gibson , the screenplay was written by Ted Tally based on the novel by George Dawes Green .
action
Annie Laird, artist and single mother of twelve-year-old Oliver, is on a jury in a murder trial against Mafia boss Louie Boffano.
She meets a man who seduces her and who soon turns out to be a killer, who is called "the teacher" and who works for the accused mafia boss. The "teacher" requires Annie first to plead "not guilty" as a jury member and later that she should convince the other jurors to acquit Boffano. The "teacher" spies on Annie and threatens her to kill her son if she refuses. Annie actually succeeds in convincing the jury of the doubtfulness of the evidence brought against Boffano, so that he is eventually acquitted. But "the teacher" continues to threaten Annie. When the police get in touch with her because she as a jury member has given the impression that she is under pressure, "the teacher" kills Annie's friend Juliet to remind her of the constant threat.
Annie is now fighting back. She takes her son to a friend in Guatemala , where she believes he is safe. Then she returns and arranges a meeting with the "teacher", at which he expresses himself disparagingly about Boffano, which Annie is recording on tape. She gives the recording to Boffano, who in return promises to leave her and her son alone. Annoyed by Annie's recording, Boffano wants to have the "teacher" killed, but he gets ahead of him - realizing the threat.
The "teacher" then calls Annie that he will kill her son, whose refuge he soon discovered. He flies to Guatemala; but Annie also rushes there and in the end she shoots the "teacher".
Reviews
The film received mixed reviews. While the plot and the staging were rather praised, Demi Moore got poor reviews. In its 6/1996 issue, the cinema magazine Cinema called the actress a “blatant miscast”; Milan Pavlovic described her in the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger as "addicted to the headlines".
Awards
Demi Moore got the Golden Raspberry as worst actress in 1996 for this role and that in The Scarlet Letter .
