In a Land Before Time is a cartoon . It was produced by Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment . Directed by Don Bluth . The score is from James Horner . The film was released in 1988 by Universal Pictures . The film opened in German cinemas on June 22, 1989.

When the herbivorous dinosaurs run out of food, the little long neck (Brontosaurus or Apatosaurus) Littlefoot and his family set out to find new feeding grounds in the legendary "Great Valley". But when the continents collide, an earthquake divides the country. This separates Littlefoot from his grandparents. His mother is seriously injured in a fight with "Sharp Tooth", a Tyrannosaurus rex . In her last breath, she asks Littlefoot if he still remembers the way into the great valley. He has to follow the “big, bright disk on the horizon”, the sun, to a rock that looks like a long neck, past the volcanoes, which are called “burning mountains”. He should let his heart guide him. She dies in the presence of her son and Littlefoot takes a long time to come to terms with her death. Now Littlefoot has to start the journey to the “Great Valley” all by himself. Soon, however, he meets other dinosaur children who have also been separated from their families. These are the "Dreihorn" (Triceratops) Cera, the "Swimmer" (Saurolophus) Ducky, the "Thorntail" (Stegosaurus) Spike and the "Flieger" (Pteranodon) Petrie.

They have to find food on their way. The friends also have to master dangers. They meet the sharp tooth, believed dead, who attacks them, but they escape him. When they reach the volcanoes, they erupt and the friends endanger their lives through the lava, but survive it. Cera now wants to take the easiest route to the valley. Littlefoot explains to her that this is the wrong way, what his mother, whose voice he heard several times during the trip, said. When Cera speaks negatively about his mother, he gets angry and a fight breaks out between the two. Cera realizes that her path was wrong and sadly separates from the group. The remaining friends are close to the end of their journey when they meet Sharptooth again. They develop a plan on how to get rid of it. Ducky acts as bait and so they lure the predatory dinosaur onto a plateau. Cera surprisingly rejoins the group and with her help they manage to defeat Sharptooth by pushing him down with a rock into the lake in front of the plateau. Petrie is apparently killed and mourned, but survived and continues the journey with the others. In the end, the five reach the said rock and when Littlefoot goes ahead, he finds the "Great Valley", calls his friends over and they happily run into their new home. They meet their families again. After his mother died, Littlefoot lived with his grandparents.

In a country before our time , the film magazine cinema gave five out of five points and wrote that the film was "heartfelt and adorable."

When it came to film releases , it came to the conclusion that In a Country Before Our Time is a film that “takes its audience seriously” and at the same time “trusts complicated discussions, such as loss and prejudice.” In addition, the animations of the 1988 cartoon were praised.

At the IMDb , the film received 7.4 out of 10 points. On RottenTomatoes he got 72% positive reviews. (As of January 26, 2020)

• The US spokeswoman for Ducky, Judith Barsi , was shot and killed by her father together with her mother in July 1988 at the age of 10 before the latter committed suicide.
