“Doolin (to Bob): Why do we call ourselves the Dalton Gang? Please explain that to us!
Bob: It's very easy, Billy. Gangs are always named after the leader. Like the Jesse and Younger gang.
Doolin: That's not a reason for me. I could be the leader too, (the rest of them laugh) well.
Bob: Billy, first of all, you have no leadership skills. I have it. Second: Doolin gang sounds stupid (laughter).
Grat or Emmett: Doolin is a strange name.
Bitter Creek: Do you know what I'm thinking? We do it very democratically: we vote (happy reactions from some)!
Bob: It's good, it's good. We vote! Grat, you piss anyone off who votes for Billy!
Burr: Okay, Bob.
Doolin: Hey Bob! That should be democratic? "

After a shootout breaks out in the Mexican Archulleta's casino, Judge Parker has the brothel razed to the ground and dismisses the Daltons (Parker: “Would you mind telling me what devil rode you when you were tried to rob that scoundrel Archulleta, with whom half of the influential people in the area have gambling debts? ”). A further approach is out of the question for the lawyer.

Film plot and transmitted historical reality

The opening credits document “What follows here is not intended to be an accurate re-creation of historical fact. Not that it matters. " Nevertheless, it has a documentary character, since the film shows place and time twelve times. Compared to other film adaptations (When the Daltons Rode - 1940, The last day - 1975), the TV film from 1979 only focuses on the Daltons, and 147 minutes of playing time also give you the opportunity to go into breadth and depth.

Bitter Creek was shot in 1895. Emmett was unable to meet him in 1934, as shown in the film.

In 1876 , members of the James Younger Gang (Cole Younger was a nephew of Ma Dalton) were on the run again and again. In the film they visited the Dalton farm in Kansas, in 1876 the Daltons were still living in Missouri (The Life Story of Emmett Dalton, daltondatabank.org).

Frank Dalton (* 1859) was a marshal under Justice Parker's jurisdiction and was shot on duty in 1887. In the film, he was marshal as early as 1876 and was shot in 1890 at the age of 42.

Gang members mentioned as narrators in the Emmett Dalton film (Bitter Creek, Doolin, Blackface, Broadwell, Powers, McElhennie) actually existed. (Legends of America, The Dalton Brothers - Lawmen & Outlaws)

U.S. Marshals : Burr and Bob served as marshals as shown in the film and fell under Judge Parker's jurisdiction. Emmett was only a temporary worker (Daltons as Lawmen, Juliet Galonska; with reference to The Dalton Gang Story, Nancy Samuelson).

Charlie Montgomery , August 1889. Bob Dalton was supposed to arrest him for whiskey trading in Indian Territory, had him shot and took him to Fort Smith. Since no one complained about the body, Bob had to pay for the funeral. In the film, Montgomery is caught by the Daltons and shot by the railway detective, it is also discussed that the Daltons may have to pay for funeral expenses (Legends of America, The Dalton Brothers - Lawmen & Outlaws).

Bill Dalton served in the California legislature but did not run for governor as shown in the film. Railroad worker Leland Stanford was not elected governor as a rival candidate by Bill Dalton, as mentioned in the Emmett film. Furthermore, the election year was not 1891, as shown in the film, but 1890 ( Henry Markham was elected ). Stanford was actually governor of California from 1861 to 1863.

Railway detective Will Smith was the Southern Pacific Railway Chief of Police. Since there were some unexplained railroad robberies after the Daltons arrived in California and the politically active Bill Dalton repeatedly spoke out against the railroad companies, he suspected the Daltons (Man-Hunters of the Old West, Robert K. DeArment, 2017 University of Oklahoma Press) .

Alila : In February 1891, a railroad train was ambushed in Alila, the Dalton gang was accused, and Grat and Bill Dalton were arrested and charged. Bill was acquitted, Burr convicted. In many sources there is weak evidence. Burr fled, there are also two representations about the escape (The infamous Dalton gang terrorizes the country). The film implies that the robbery at Alila was fabricated by Smith. Grat also mentions that he broke out of prison with a fellow inmate.

US Marshal Heck Thomas (1850–1912) was considered a relentless pursuer of the Daltons. Emmett mentioned that Thomas was the main reason for the two raids on October 5, 1892, the Dalton gang wanted to come in for a lot of money and then leave the territory. In the film, Thomas only has a very subordinate role as Parker's collaborator. (Heck Thomas - Tough Law in Indian Territory, Legends of America).

Adair : The robbery on a train in the Adair train station shown in the film took place in July 1892, as in the film there was also an additional guard on the train. (The Dalton Gang Train Robbery at Adair, IT)

Coffeyville, October 5, 1892. The gang's intentions were only discovered during the raids. Some citizens armed themselves and attacked the bandits. After everyone except Emmett had already been shot, Emmett wanted to help his brother Bob. Then he was shot too. In the film you were prepared for the attack.
