Henley Passport Index

The Henley Passport Index (full name: Henley & Partners Passport Index ) is a global ranking of states and territories based on the freedom of travel that their citizens enjoy.

In collaboration with the International Air Transport Association , Henley & Partners , a global consulting firm based in Jersey , has analyzed the visa requirements of all countries and territories in the world since 2006. Until 2017 this index was called the Henley & Partners Visa Restrictions Index .

methodology

To determine the number of points for each state or territory, the IATA database is queried as follows:

1. For each state it is checked which entry regulations exist for its citizens when entering all other states.
2. Each individual exam assumes the following conditions:
   • The passport holder is a citizen of the state that issued the passport. The passport was not issued abroad.
   • The passport is valid.
   • The pass holder is of legal age.
   • Entry is planned for tourist or business purposes.
   • The duration of the stay is at least three days.
3. The following additional conditions are observed in the queries:
   • The queries are only made for holders of standard passports. Diplomatic passports are not taken into account.
   • Special requirements for passports, such as validity beyond the travel time or the number of blank pages, are ignored.
   • Countries with restrictions for female travelers are not included.
   • Health requirements, sufficient funds or existing return flight tickets of the traveler are not taken into account.
   • Pre-approval procedures by airlines, such as the APIS, are not considered a travel restriction.
4. If no visa is required for the traveler according to the above conditions, a number of points (value = 1) is awarded for the state of the passport holder.
5. After all individual queries have been carried out, the total number of points for a state corresponds to the number of visa-free travel options for its citizens.

current result

The Japanese passport improved by one point compared to the previous year and is now at the top with 191 points, ahead of Singapore with 190 points. Third place with 189 points each is shared by Germany and South Korea. The number of points for Germany increased by 1 compared to the previous year. The passports of Austria and Switzerland are in seventh place with 185 points each, despite the same number of points as in the previous year.

Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan continue to occupy the bottom three ranks in the 2020 index, with visa-free access to 29 or fewer countries.
