action

The film is set in South Africa in the 1930s. The small PK, an immigrant half-orphan, belongs to a minority in the country, the English. His father, a farmer, died in the African wilderness. Together with his mother, PK grows up with his wet nurse from the Zulu people who teach him their culture and language. PK's mother dies and he is placed in a boarding school, where he is bullied and beaten because of his English origins until he becomes a bed-wetter.

In the internment camp, PK encounters the calm of the scenery, a composer of German origin and cactus friend who takes him under his wing and continues to teach. PK quickly becomes friends with convict Geel Piet, a boxer who teaches him boxing. It quickly becomes clear that PK has a unique boxing talent, and Geel Piet sets out to spread legends about a white man, the "rainmaker", who will one day unite the nations.

The end of the war is drawing near. The German professor is released, Geel Piet is beaten to death by a guard in prison. PK, meanwhile grown into a young man, finds himself in an English boarding school. PK is among "his own kind", the past long since repressed. He boxes and wins, is a little hero in the ring among his classmates. But the past catches up with him again when he enrolls in a boxing school that mocks the law of the country and publicly propagates that all races are allowed to box here. The leader arranges a fight for PK in Alexandria with a black boxer named Gideon.

PK falls in love with Maria, the daughter of an arch-conservative of the upper class. The father finds out about her boyfriend and forbids her to see him. But Maria sneaks out of the house and dares to take a step with PK to Alexandria, a village marked by apartheid. Maria is present at the boxing match, but is at the same time terrified and fascinated by the poverty and the intimate cohesion of the Zulu community. PK wins the boxing match, and Gideon quickly intervenes against the angry crowd - PK is the "rainmaker". The crowd celebrates and PK has an inkling of the fate that awaits him.

The boxing school is burned down by the white racists and the headmaster arrested. Together with Maria, PK opens a secret classroom in a church at the urging of Gideon and his wife. They hold a couple of sessions to teach blacks to read and write. The rulers get behind the hiding place, break into the building and inadvertently kill Maria as she interferes in the fighting.

PK falls into a deep hole and is difficult to straighten up. He plans to return to England to fulfill his scholarship. But Gideon finally manages to stop him. Together they cross the country and have big plans to teach all black people to read and write.
