The Reach: In the firing line (original title Beyond the Reach ) is an American film by the director Jean-Baptiste Léonetti from 2014 . It is a film adaptation of the novel Deathwatch by Robb White , which was filmed as Savages by Lee H. Katzin in 1974 .

Young Ben lives in a small town in New Mexico . Shortly after his girlfriend Laina after Denver moved to where the college to visit, it is the rich financial managers Madec as a tracker for illegal hunting of bighorn sheep involved. While the two are sitting , Madec accidentally shoots the old hermit Charlie who lives in the desert. Fearing that this could harm him professionally, he wants to cover up the accident. He shoots the dead man in the head with Ben's gun to get Ben to help him cover up. Nevertheless, Ben decides to inform the authorities, whereupon Madec forces him at gunpoint to strip down to his underpants and run into the desert. He wants Ben to die there so that he can blame Charlie's death on him.

Madec follows Ben in his car to watch him die. However, Ben can save himself during the day, and in the night he manages to overpower Madec, whom he then takes to the sheriff , who is tied up . After Madec escapes from prison and escapes in a waiting helicopter , Ben drives to Denver to see Laina; also to gain distance there. He has a nightmare where Madec shoots him with a shotgun. When Ben is startled, he realizes that Madec has really broken into Laina's house in the meantime. However, he is shot by Laina with a revolver that Ben gave her and finally killed by Ben.

Cut versions

The original version of the film was given an age rating of 16 and over by the FSK in Germany.

For reasons of protection of minors, the ZDF decided to cut the film to include the vigilante scene described above for the broadcast on free TV . The credits began as soon as Ben woke up from the nightmare.

The Reach: In the line of fire in New Mexico in Farmington , Aztec as well as in the Indian reservation Navajo Nation Reservation , among other things at Shiprock . The film premiered on September 6, 2014 at the Toronto International Film Festival . In Germany it was released on DVD on September 25, 2015 .

The vehicle that the wealthy Madec uses to hunt is a Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG 6x6 registered in Germany, the AMG luxury variant of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class with an eight-cylinder engine and 6x6 drive as a pickup.
