Theo de Jong (born April 24, 1957 in Utrecht ) is a Dutch fusion and jazz musician ( electric bass ).

De Jong began trying out the ukulele , guitar , piano and other musical instruments at a very young age as the child of two musicians . At the age of eleven, he began playing the bass guitar . He was initially interested in pop music; he became a member of various pop groups. He started attending the local jazz club when he was 15 and learned about jazz standards at jam sessions . While still at school he made his first recordings as a studio musician, mainly advertising and film music.

From the age of 19 he began to play with groups such as Kayak and Ekseption as well as with Ton Scherpenzeel, Kaz Lux , Floor van Zutphen, Wim Overgaauw , Chris Hinze , Jan Spaans and many others. At the age of 23 he belonged (with drummer Bruno Castellucci ) to the trio of pianist Rob Franken , with whom he worked with musicians such as Toots Thielemans , Dizzy Gillespie , Bob Malach , Victor Feldman , Philip Catherine , Marjory Barnes, Dee Daniels, Ed Thigpen , Tony Scott and Michel Herr appeared. He also played with Flora Purim and Airto Moreira , Paquito D'Rivera and with Peter Herbolzheimer's Rhythm & Brass .

From 1983 de Jong worked almost exclusively with the Latin band Batida with the percussionist Nippy Noya . After many concerts and an album with this band, he decided to leave the stage for a while and began teaching in 1985 at the Hilversum and Utrecht Conservatories.

Since 1992 he has been working more as a freelance musician again and has performed with Dee Dee Bridgewater , Maurane , Eef Albers , Humphrey Campbell , Frits Landesbergen , Gino Vannelli , Dado Moroni and Fay Claassen . De Jong is also a member of 3HandsClapping (with Peter Tiehuis and Bart Fermie ), the Peter Hertmans Quartet, the trio of his wife Anne Wolf and the Catharsis project around Ivan Paduart and Quentin Dujardin . He can also be heard on albums by Herman van Veen and Ack van Rooyen .
