Theophilus Howard, 2nd Earl of Suffolk KG (* 1584 - † June 3, 1640 in Suffolk House ), was an English nobleman and politician.

Theophilus Howard was the eldest son of Thomas Howard , who was raised to Baron Howard de Walden by Elizabeth I through a Writ of Summons in 1597 and later also achieved the dignity of Earl of Suffolk . Theophilus was born on an unknown date in 1584 and was baptized in Walden on August 13, 1584. He studied from 1598 in Cambridge at Magdalen College and was 1605 Master of Arts . He died on June 3, 1640 at Suffolk House and was buried in Walden.

Political career

His steep political career began as a Member of the House of Commons in England . He was elected to parliament for the constituency of Maldon as early as 1605 and remained a member of parliament for this constituency until 1610, after which he served as a civil servant of the English crown in numerous, increasingly important administrative offices. He began his administrative career with the office of Lieutenant of the Gentlemen Pensioners in 1605 and remained in this post until 1614. Following this activity, the office of captain of this institution took over from July 1614 to December 1619 and after a brief interruption again from January 1620-1635 . In addition, he was a member of Gray's Inn from 1605 , was Joint Steward of the Royal Manors in Wales from June 30, 1606, and Councilor for the Colony of Virginia from May 23, 1609.

On February 8, 1609 he was appointed to the House of Lords by means of a Writ of Acceleration by early bestowing the subordinate title of his father Baron Howard de Walden . Finally he took over the post of Governor of Guernsey in March 1609 . He continued to rise at regular short intervals: on July 2, 1611, he was Keeper of the Castle of Greenwich, Joint Lord Lieutenant of the northern English counties of Cumberland , Westmorland and Northumberland from 1619 to 1639, and from 1626 until his death he also held the offices of Lord Lieutenant of the southern counties of Suffolk , Cambridgeshire, and Dorset . Although he had already held so many offices, he was appointed to the Privy Council from November 12, 1626 , appointed High-Steward of Ipswich in 1627, as well as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and Constable of Dover Castle from November 24 Made August 1627 until his death in 1640. With so many offices it was almost taken for granted that the king in 1627 also his Garter awarded.

After his father's death in 1626, he inherited his title Earl of Suffolk .

progeny

In March 1612 he married Elisabeth Home († 19 August 1633), daughter of George Home, 1st Earl of Dunbar . The marriage resulted in nine children.
