Theten is a district of Lennestadt in the Olpe district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The place is near the federal highway 55 in the Lennetal ; Neighboring villages are Hachen , Trockenbrück and Grevenbrück .
History - local development
The place was first mentioned in documents as "Tatena" in 1072, from 1101 to 1131 it was called "Tetin" and from 1281 to 1313 "Theten", and 1433 "Tetene".
In the foundation deed of 1072 of the Grafschaft monastery by the Archbishop of Cologne Anno II. , A farm in Theten is mentioned in the list of properties.
The following names are mentioned for the Theten peasantry from an appraisal register from 1535 on the Turkish tax : Henneken, Der Starke, Hermans Johann, Hannß Hesse, Hanß In dem Steynhofe. In 1606 Maria on the Brogh zu Elspe bought the Salzgessers Hof zu Elspe from Johann Starke in Theten with 220 common Dahlers, each counted at 26 shillings, plus 60 Reichsdahlers, each kept at 39 shillings.
If one equates the number of the 5 previously mentioned persons liable for the treasury with the number of families or houses in Theten at that time and calculates 6 residents per house, then around 1535 about 30 people must have lived there.
In the summer of 2015, a small sculpture park was created in the Lenneauen at the end of the village near the bike path. The group of figures “Lennestrand” was created by the Essen sculptor Roger Löcherbach. Each of the figures is carved from a single log. The material and expression of the figures fit harmoniously into the surroundings. The project was financially supported by a foundation of a local credit institute. The artist says of the group of figures: "My sculptures bathe in life: upside down, upside down, pensive, this side of the world, happy, visionary, playful ..."
The rural town with some neat half-timbered houses had 215 inhabitants at the end of June 2020, with the proportion of seniors over 65 years of age at 19.5% being above the average for the city of Lennestadt (17.4%). The central building yard of the city of Lennestadt is located on the outskirts.
chapel
Today's Chapel in Theten was built in 1778. It is built as a single-nave chapel with 3/8 end to the east and west. The windows are arched; just closed on the east side. Arched entrance, Renaissance. At that time, the furnishings included a copper brew kettle, which was loaned to the residents to generate income for the chapel. This cauldron was stolen in 1760.
The altarpiece shows the Sistine Madonna by the artist Raffael (* 1483, † 1520). Whether the picture is an original by Raphael himself, by one of his students or a later copy by an unknown artist cannot currently be determined.
In 1938 the chapel in Theten was given over to the Elspe parish. An income register of the sexton Johann Ortmann from 1599 shows that he receives bread and eggs from every man who owns the house on the day of consecration (patronage festival) in all chapel towns.
