Thomas Fischer (born September 25, 1949 in Esslingen ) is a German provincial Roman archaeologist .

From 1972 to 1978 Fischer studied Roman provincial archeology, prehistory and early history, ancient history, medieval history and classical archeology in Regensburg, Tübingen and Munich, where he received his doctorate in 1978. 1978/79 he was a researcher in a research project on ostraetischen Donaulimes and participated in excavations in Künzing and Eining part. From 1979 to 1984 he was a scientific consultant at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , first for the Upper Bavaria-North region, and from 1980 for the Upper Palatinate region. In 1984 he became scientific advisor to the departments of the Early Middle Ages and Roman Numismatics at the Prehistoric State Collection in Munich. From 1992 until his retirement in 2015, Fischer was professor for the archeology of the Roman provinces at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Cologne . He is a corresponding member of the German and Austrian Archaeological Institute .
