Thorsten Bach (born April 15, 1965 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German chemist and professor of organic chemistry at the Technical University of Munich .

Life

Bach studied chemistry at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg and graduated in 1988 with a diploma thesis in the work of George A. Olah at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles . He then moved to the Philipps University in Marburg , where he received his doctorate in 1991 under Manfred T. Reetz . After a post-doctoral stay with David A. Evans at Harvard University in Cambridge (Massachusetts) , he began his independent research career in 1992 with Dieter Hoppe at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . In 1997, Bach was appointed university professor at the Philipps University in Marburg, followed by a call to the Technical University of Munich in 2000 .

plant

Thorsten Bach has been researching stereoselective photochemical reactions for many years . During his habilitation, the focus was on the diastereoselective synthesis of oxetanes by the Paternò-Büchi reaction . From 2000 onwards, enantioselective photochemical reactions were in the foreground - initially with a stoichiometrically added chiral template, since 2005 with the use of various chiral photocatalysts and chiral Lewis acids . Further research focuses on transition metal catalysis and the use of free carbenium ions in diastereoselective Friedel-Crafts alkylations . Results from all three main research areas found their way into the total synthesis of a number of natural products.
