Vicente Catelo Sotto III (born August 24, 1948 in Manila ) is a Filipino actor and politician .

Studies and acting career

After attending elementary school and high school , he studied English at the Colegio de San Juan de Letran in Manila and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (AB English).

Political career and promotion to senator

While still in his acting career, he began his political career in 1988 when he was elected Vice- Mayor of Quezon City . At the same time he was President of the City Council and Chairman of the Anti- Drug Abuse Council of Quezon City during his tenure, which lasted until 1992 . During this time he was also the founder and first president of the League of Vice Mayors of the Philippines.

In 1992 he became a member of the Senate for the first time and, after being re-elected in 1998, was a member of the Senate until June 2004. During this time he was Deputy Majority Leader from 1992 to 1998 and at the same time Chairman of the Tourism Committee and the Committee on Local Government. In addition, from 1995 to 1996 he was chairman of the committees for rural development as well as for youth and sport development. He was then chairman of the Joint Supervisory Committee of Congress for the Implementation of the Local Government Act from 1996 to 1998, and of the Committee against Illicit Drugs from 1996 to 1997.

After his re-election, he was the majority leader in the influential Commission on Appointments between 1998 and 2002 . At the same time, Sotto was chairman of the committees for the public service between 1998 and 2001 and for science and technology between 1999 and 2001. After working as a deputy minority leader, he was the leader of the opposition in the Senate from 2002 to 2004 as a minority floor leader .

In July 2008, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appointed him chairman of the Dangerous Drugs Board , an institution under the President's office. He held this office until November 2009.

In the 2010 elections he was re-elected Senator and has been the majority floor leader there since July 26, 2010 .
