Tobias van de Locht (born March 15, 1975 in Duisburg ) is a German conductor and composer .

Career

Tobias van de Locht studied piano and conducting in Düsseldorf , attended master classes in choral conducting ( Eric Ericson , Stockholm), organ ( Daniel Roth , Paris) and film music ( John Frizzell , Los Angeles) and graduated with a Master of Business Administration from European Management Academy in Paris. After his studies he had his first engagements with the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and the Dortmund Symphony Orchestra. From 2004 to 2008 he was chief conductor of the Metropol-Orchester, from 2008 to 2012 music director of the Kaarster Chamber Orchestra and from 2012 to 2015 chief conductor of the Sinfonia Königswinter . Since 2008 he has been chief conductor of the Sinfonia Düsseldorf, since 2016 also chief conductor of the Witten Symphony Orchestra and the Malcolm Arnold Festival Orchestra Weimar. The orchestras with which he worked as a guest conductor include the Philharmonia Aachen, the Braunschweiger Kammerorchester, the Duisburg Philharmoniker , the Ötztaler Sinfoniker (Austria), the Rhein-Ruhr-Philharmonie , the Sinfonieorchester Ruhr, the Segeberger Sinfonieorchester and the Sinfonietta Wuppertal. There has also been a special connection since 2013 with the brass ensemble NRW Brass, which he has conducted several times since 2012. He was given special support by the English composer Sir Malcolm Arnold, whose assistant and friend he was. Tobias van de Locht is the first conductor to perform all nine of Arnold's symphonies as a cycle. So he conducted z. For example, on King's Day 2014, the Dutch premiere of Symphony No. 8 in Dordrecht near Rotterdam. In addition to Malcolm Arnold, Tobias van de Locht is also a conductor, editor and editor for the work of Howard Blake (The Snowman) and Bernard Herrmann ( Taxi Driver ).

Despite the occasional atonality, Van de Locht's compositional style does not dispense with memorable melodies and attaches importance to craftsmanship and contrapuntal skill as well as skillful and effective instrumentation.
