Tomáš Káňa (born November 29, 1987 in Opava , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech ice hockey player who has been under contract with HC Vítkovice Steel in the Czech Extraliga since 2011 and has been loaned to HC Energie Karlovy Vary since the end of October 2012 . His brother Jan is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Tomáš Káňa began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of HC Vítkovice Steel , for whose professional team he made his debut in the extra league in the 2004/05 season . In his only season assignment, he remained pointless and punished. In the following years he prevailed in the professional team of HC Vítkovice and played for this regularly in the extra league. In the 2006/07 season he was loaned to BK Mladá Boleslav from the second-class first division towards the end of the season. In the following season he came mainly as a loan player for the second division HC Sareza Ostrava and the Extraliga participant HC Slovan Ústečtí Lvi for use. With the latter he failed in the relegation and his team rose from bottom of the table in the first division. After the end of the season in Czech, he also played eight games for the Alaska Aces in the ECHL , whose cooperation partner St. Louis Blues had already selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 2006 in the second round as the 31st player.
In the 2008/09 season Káňa stayed in North America with the Alaska Aces, with which he was only subject to the South Carolina Stingrays in the playoff final for the Kelly Cup . At the same time he came to 18 missions for the Peoria Rivermen in the American Hockey League . After the following season began with the Aces in the ECHL, he was on 8 December 2009, with Brendan Bell in exchange for Pascal Pelletier to the Columbus Blue Jackets made. For this he played six games in the National Hockey League by the end of the season , in which he prepared two goals. The rest of the season, however, he spent with their AHL farm team Syracuse Crunch . In the 2010/11 season he plays for Columbus' new AHL farm team Springfield Falcons . For the 2011/12 season he returned to his hometown club HC Vítkovice Steel from the Extraliga.
From the end of October 2012 until the end of January 2013 he was loaned to league competitor HC Energie Karlovy Vary .
International
For the Czech Republic , Káňa took part in the junior division of the U18 World Junior Championships in 2005 and the U20 World Junior Championships in 2006 and 2007 .
