Thomas Jeremy King, Baron King of Bridgwater CH , PC (born June 13, 1933 in Rugby ) is a British Conservative Party politician .

Career

King was a member of the House of Commons for Bridgwater County from 1970 to 2001 . From January 6, 1983 to June 11, 1983 he was Minister of the Environment and Minister of Transport from June 11 to October 16 of the same year. He was Secretary of State for Employment from October 16, 1983 to September 2, 1985, and Minister of Northern Ireland from September 3, 1985 to July 24, 1989 . From July 24, 1989 to April 11, 1992 he was Minister of Defense. From 1994 to 2001 he was chairman of the Intelligence and Security Committee . He did not run for the 2001 general election and was raised to life peer on July 9, 2001 as Baron King of Bridgwater , of Bridgwater in the County of Somerset . He has been a member of the House of Lords since then .
