Traces of Red is a 1992 American thriller .
action
The narrator Jack Dobson is shown at the beginning as dead; he was shot. In a flashback you can see him as a police officer in Palm Beach ; his partner is married Steve Frayn. His brother Michael is running for a senatorial post.
Jack has a relationship with the wealthy Ellen Schofield, as well as another affair with a waitress who is found dead. Another woman with whom he had a relationship is also murdered. Both women show traces of the particular type of lipstick. Jack receives a threatening letter printed out on a PC printer. He checks the PC system of Ellen, who is suspected of being the perpetrator, and takes a sample from the printer.
Jack tells Steve that he was molested by his teacher as a child. His boss forces him to undergo psychiatric treatment. Frayn takes the brunt of the investigation and suspects his partner. Dobson is looking for the perpetrator among his next of kin.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote in the “ Chicago Sun-Times ” that the thriller made no sense. The viewer understands what is happening, but remains confused in the end. The characters are fake Hollywood-style.

Lorraine Bracco was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in 1993.
